High Life

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 11:09 AM PST

My friends at Triptych just had the sold-out premiere of their film HIGH LIFE yesterday in Toronto. It's a darkly funny story about a handful of junkies who rob an armored car; it goes wrong. Maclean's calls it "a gritty Canadian gem":
High Life, by Winnipeg writer-director Gary Yates, is ... a blast. Witty, well-acted and full of surprises, its a Canadian answer to the Coen brothers, with a Tarantino kick.
The Globe and Mail sez:
Forget about morphine and cotton candy; if you want to get off on a movie, go see High Life , a movie so cool you won't want to take off your coat when you get inside the theatre.
Check it out!

HIGH LIFE opened yesterday in Toronto; it opens in Montreal on the 29th.

Profile: Robert Zemeckis (Part 2)

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 12:00 PM PST

Last week, we featured the first part of Trevor Hogg's profile on screenwriter-director Robert Zemeckis here. Trevor is back with Part 2 on FlickeringMyth.com here. A nice excerpt re Back to the Future:
Robert ZemeckisWhen Bob Gale wondered what it would have been like to have been a high school classmate of his father, Robert Zemeckis decided to develop the concept with him. The main character was a video pirate who used a kitchen appliance as his transporter; the idea was aborted when the moviemaker became "concerned that kids would accidentally lock themselves in refrigerators." The modern design of the DeLorean automobile, which could have been realistically mistaken as a spaceship in the 1950s, became the transportation of choice. The first draft of the script, entitled Back to the Future, was completed in February of 1981. Getting the project produced became a four year odyssey of rejection. According to Gale, Columbia Pictures "thought it was a really nice, cute, warm film, but not sexual enough." Disney passed, as the story was not deemed to be family entertainment. The idea of approaching Zemeckis's influential mentor was aborted, revealed Bob Gale. "We were afraid that we would get the reputation that we were two guys who could only get a job because we were pals with Steven Spielberg."

Frustration gave way to approval when Romancing the Stone made Robert Zemeckis a bankable director. With a reputation established on his own merits, the moviemaker approached Spielberg who then arranged for Universal Pictures to fund the project. Unable to break from his commitment to the television series Family Ties (NBC, 1982 to 1989), Michael J. Fox passed on the part of Marty McFly. Taking his place was Eric Stoltz (Mask), but the casting decision was reversed a month into principal photography. Stoltz's portrayal was too dramatic; a more humorous touch was required. Even though changing the male lead would add another $3 million to the $14 million budget, Zemeckis decided to approach his first choice again. A deal was subsequently struck between the director and the producers of the hit TV show, which enabled Fox to accept the role. Remarking on his signature film performance, the Canadian actor said he could relate to McFly on a personal level. "All I did in high school was skateboard, chase girls and play in bands. I even dreamed of becoming a rock star."

Back to the FutureBack to the Future features the teenaged Marty McFly inadvertently traveling back to the moment when his parents meet, only to find himself becoming the object of his mother's affections. To temper any negative audience reaction to the Oedipal relationship, the line, "It's like kissing my brother." was inserted into the dialogue. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale had nothing to fear. The movie spent eleven weeks as the number one box office draw; earning $381 million worldwide, it was the top grossing picture of 1985.

At the Academy Awards, the film won for Best Sound Editing and was nominated for Best Original Song, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Sound Design while the BAFTAS lauded it with nominations for Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Editing. In 2007, a year after being voted by the readers of Empire Magazine as the twenty-third greatest movie ever made, Back to the Future was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
For the rest of Part 2 of the profile, go here. And here's the original trailer for Back to the Future:

Nancy, BTW, is not a prostitute.

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 10:47 AM PST

At least, not in the way that we understand the word.

During my research for Oliver Twist, I came across something that gave me pause. To wit, that Nancy is often referred to in reviews and literary criticism as being a prostitute.

Thing is, though, I read the book several times. And I was buggered if I could find any actual evidence pointing that way. The passage in the book that usually gets quoted as proving this runs so:

"They wore a good deal of hair, not very neatly turned up behind, and were rather untidy about the shoes and stockings. They were not exactly pretty, perhaps; but they had a great deal of colour in their faces, and looked quite stout and healthy. Being remarkably free and easy with their manners, Oliver thought them to be very nice girls indeed. Which there is no doubt they were."

Come on. Really? That single passage is the only evidence in the entire book? That, my friends, is a stretch.

In fact, there's plenty of evidence against. Nancy says to Fagin "I thieved for you when I was a child not half as old as this! I have been in the same trade, and in the same service, for twelve years since."

So she states quite clearly that her profession is thief. Not prostitute.

And yet everyone thinks she is. Why?

I managed to chase it down, in the end, to the introduction to the 1841 edition. Dickens himself says it. "That the boys are pickpockets, and the girl is a prostitute."

So Dickens says that she's a prostitute - and then puts no evidence for it in the book. The boys are shown picking pockets, Fagin being a fence, Sikes being a murderer, and yet Nancy's purported profession is never shown or stated within the book.

Seems more than a little odd, doesn't it?

The answer finally came from The London Underworld in the Victorian Period - a selection of contemporary writings on crime in Victorian times. And there it is on page 83, at the end of the section on prostitutes.

"The last head in our classification is 'Cohabitant prostitutes'."

The book then goes on to define a cohabitant prostitute. It's someone who moves in with a man without being married to them. Someone who has sex before marriage - and continues to do so. A kept woman, as the old phrase has it.

As Nancy is.

Proof? Fagin visits her in Bill Sikes' apartment. Where she lives.

A thief, yes. But not a prostitute in the way we would use the word. Nancy is just a woman who lives with her boyfriend, and is supported by him.

And is deeply, tragically, fatally in love.

10 pages on a weekend...what!

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 10:45 AM PST

dog is gone, wife is gone, the day hasn't started yet. I actually had the whole morning to myself and got 10 pages of this script done. It is coming down. The page count is now just about 120 when I'm through this outline, which is where I want it. Usually, my first drafts are around 100 pages, but I really wanted to have some meat on this script's bones so I could cut and manipulate as much as possible. I won't say I like it. It is a garbage draft after all, but it feels really good to write. I forgot how much I enjoyed it. All of the prep/rewrite/slave to another master bs is gone. I don't have to worry about this being good for anyone but myself. And that feels good.

Written Interview: Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli)

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 07:00 AM PST

Today's interview is with screenwriter Gary Whitta, whose movie The Book of Eli opens this weekend. The interview is found on DoneDealPro.com. Here is an excerpt:

You sold The Book of Eli in May 2007 to Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures. Where did the idea for the story come from, and what was writing the script like? What took place during the selling process? Were there rewrites?

The Book of Eli came from a number of different places. On a pulp level I've always been fascinated by lone wandering hero type protagonists; I love characters like The Man With No Name and those great old samurai movies like Yojimbo. There's something quite mythic about the idea of the enigmatic warrior nomad, so I had been looking for a way to do my version of that character for a while. I've also always been fascinated by questions of faith and spirituality and was looking for a canvas that would let me explore those ideas. So Eli was really a combination of those ideas and wanting to create a story that would deliver on a bad-ass popcorn level but which might also leave people with something a little deeper to think about once the film was over.

The first draft of the script came together very, very quickly. It's a very simple story that required minimal outlining (all I had was a one-page beat sheet and some longer essays I'd written for myself about who Eli was and what the theme of the film was), so I had a first rough draft finished in about six days, writing about twenty pages a day. I did some rewrites to clean it up, and we went out to studios shortly after and it sold to Warner Bros for Joel Silver to produce pretty quickly. We went into more rewrites after that, mostly working with the Hughes Brothers and Denzel to integrate their notes since they had very specific ideas about what they wanted to bring to the story. I have to say the development process with those guys was really fantastic and really helped make the script a lot better, but at the same time I have the rare privilege of being able to look at the finished film and absolutely recognize it as the film that I wrote; no compromises. I'm really happy with it.

This should underscore something for each of us: Write something we're passionate about! That's one advantage pre-pro writers have over professional screenwriters, who often accept writing assignments about which they are less than passionate -- you can write whatever you want. So yes, look for a good story concept. Brainstorm great characters. But don't forget to write a story with which you have a strong emotional resonance. That passion will not only help you to finish the script, it will also shine through in your words.

H/T to Joshua James for the link. Here's the trailer for The Book of Eli:

Creatively Stressed: Anxiety is NOT the Enemy!

Posted: 16 Jan 2010 05:26 AM PST

Copyright (c) 2009 Valery Satterwhite

You're obsessed. You're obsessed with your work, your craft. You think about your art, your character, painting, sculpture, upcoming tour, or screenplay seemingly every waking minute of every day. Heck, you even dream about it!

This fiendish infatuation with your craft, the passion that drives you to get out of bed in the morning is a wonderful gift. Why is it, then, that this fixation on what makes the earth move for you can also stop you dead in your tracks? Cold. Left abandoned by the "What if's" or "I'm not enough's" or any version of "I can't because".

What starts as a life-affirming energizer bunny within you becomes a taunting dragon that tortures you day in and day out. You feel like there is no escape. If you walk away from what your heart is calling you to become you trade desire for a lifetime of despair. Anxiety.

What is anxiety? Anxiety is worry, anticipation for a future misfortune. Anxiety is irrational fear. Rational fear is real. You fear fire if you're in a burning house because fire will deliver great harm to you if you just sit there. Irrational fear is worry that your house might burn to the ground as you sleep when there is no sign of fire, no observable hint of a pending fire, as you rest your head on your pillow. Irrational fear is despair over potential bad reviews of your work. You spend your days in desperate anxiety over what you think will be a career, or life-ending, dose of criticism. You believe that your future will be ruined if your performance or creation doesn't meet with high approval and reward. You think your life will be meaningless; you will have no value or purpose.

And, in your anxiety, you are stuck. You're frozen on your path like the proverbial deer in the headlights. You Find Excuses And Reasons (F.E.A.R.) to put off moments of judgment. You never finish your painting, screenplay or composition. You blow off your audition because you think your boss won't let you have the afternoon off. And then you beat yourself up over your procrastination and missed opportunity. And what you fear becomes even more real to you.

Nonsense!

Your anxiety can work for you! Anxiety is just a signal. It is a signal to your Higher Self that you are about to stretch out of your current comfort zone; about to grow. You are about to enter into unknown territory and that ego within you, the Inner Critic, is spooked. Just observe. Notice when your Inner Critic, the voice that delivers your self-doubt and fear, is freaked out. Know that in that moment you have a choice. You can give your personal power over to your Inner Critic, let him lead your choice and stay right where you are where it is 'safe'. Or, you can recognize that you are about to take one giant step closer to the actualization of your dream.

Remind your egoic Inner Critic that whatever happens, you will be safe. If you are booed off the stage, publicly humiliated by an art critic or your screenplay is tossed in the round file you are still you. You still have meaning and purpose. And you get to learn something from that experience. These lessons are gifts for they are what ultimately deliver what you desire – the masterful expression of your full potential. Look around you. Those you admire got to where they are through a path of stretching, learning, growing, and mastering their craft. So can you.

Choose to maintain your personal power. Know that what you fear is also what you are here to do. There is only one way to mitigate your anxiety and that is to do the thing that makes you anxious!

How can I use Microsoft Word for screenwriting with tab stops and automatic name finishers?

I would like to write a screenplay with some of the basic features of a program like Final Draft, but I don't need all those features…mainly formating tab spaces and automatic name finishing of characters's names. I think I can do this using MS Word, and I'd greatly appreciate help in setting this up. Thanks, Mel

I am William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men... and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight? Fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!"

New Moon (marketed as The Twilight Saga: New Moon) is a 2009 American romantic fantasy film. It is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer and is the sequel to 2008's Twilight, which is based on Meyer's previous novel. Summit Entertainment greenlit the sequel in late November 2008, following the early triumph of Twilight. Directed by Chris Weitz, themovie stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively. Melissa Rosenberg, who handed in a draft of the film script during the opening weekend of Twilight, returns as the screenwriter for the second installment as well.

The movie was released on November 20, 2009 in most countries, and set domestic box office records as the biggest midnight screening with $26.3 million. This led to thelargest single day domestic gross with $72.7 million. New Moon also opened with the third biggest domestic opening weekend ($142,839,137)

* Don Cheadle as Lt. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine: Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard from the first motion picture. Howard said, "There was no reason, apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, now and then. Deals aren't kept, and good faith discussions aren't always held up." Entertainment Weekly said Favreau did notenjoy operating with Howard, often reshooting and cutting his scenes; Howard's publicist stated he had a fine experience playing the part, while Marvel chose not to comment. As Favreau and Theroux decided to lessen the role, Marvel came to Howard to discuss reducing his wages – Howard was the first artist hired in Iron Man and earned the biggest salary of the cast. The publication said they were unsure whether Howard's council left the project first or if Marvel decided to discontinue negotiating. Theroux denied the part of the report stating "the role of War Machine was scaled back and then pumped up". Cheadle just had a few hours to take the role and were not aware which storyline Rhodes would undergo. He stated he is a comic book fan, but felt there are not enough black superheroes.

Avatar Movie Facts

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have produced genetically-bred human-Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na'vi female, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).

Over time, Jake integrates himself into the Na'vi clan, and begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and the Na'vi, making him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Avatar is without a doubt the biggest movie of the year. Award winning James Cameron has been working on this movie since the release of his last huge blockbuster Titanic. A lot of movies these days get a lot of hype and do not live up to it, but I guarantee Avatar is going to deliver in a big way.

Product Description
ABOUT THE BOOK:

According to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation (an organization that promotes entrepreneurship & education) there are approximately 10 million Americans involved in starting a new business at any given time.

The book and popular seminar program, "If Nobody Loves You, Create The Demand" have emerged over the years as author, Dr. Joel Freeman, has built his own consulting business…along with his other entrepreneurial enterprises.

An alternative, long-winded title to this book could be, "If Nothing Is Happening in Your Business, Don't Sit Around Popping Martyr Pills — Work Smarter and Make Something Happen!"

Combining personal vulnerability, pithy advice and reader-friendly content Freeman has developed an intriguing approach to the entrepreneurial journey, which has already connected with many noted business experts ranging from Steve Forbes, George Fraser, Ken Blanchard, Cathy Hughes and Peter Shea to Brian Tracy, Janice Corley, Ben Carson and Rich DeVos.

Why was this "fad-free-no-bull-no-hype" book written? Simple answer. Time management. To free up Dr. Freeman's schedule. Freeman generously gives of his time and creative energy to help people with their entrepreneurial dreams. Reading this open and honest book is like sitting down with him over the dinner table for a private consultation for a few hours. When people call him, he now encourages them to read the book before discussing their ideas. Most questions are addressed in the book. One reviewer of the advance manuscript said, "…I almost felt guilty getting this kind of information without having to pay…"

I Fell Down on My Screenplay Format, and Can't Get Up!

Oh, if there was one thing that people in the movie industry despise it is screenplay formatting errors. When a screenplay format is completely off, it will raise the ire of the person reading it for a very brief moment. After the brief moment is finished, the screenplay will be placed aside never to be taken seriously again. This may seem like a cruel form of screenplay analysis but that's the way it goes. There are a number of reasons why those in the industry demand absolute loyalty in terms of adherence to standard screenplay format. Here are a few reasons why:

Proper screenplay format is designed for clarity purposes. By devising a single, specific format any and all screenplays can be read properly. When the format is off kilter, it becomes next to impossible to ascertain what the screenplay is about. If they cannot read the screenplay and make sense of it, what good is it? Here is one of the most important screenwriting tips available: always be sure the screenplay writing format is the proper one.

It is also necessary that the screenplay be free of errors. Grammar and syntax errors are a major no-no and they reflect very badly on the writer. It comes across as the writer was lazy, sloppy, or disinterested. Whether true or not is irrelevant. If that is the impression the writer makes then the writer is pretty much sunk in the prospective buyer/agent/rep's eyes.

How can you learn the proverbial tricks of the trade as far as proper screenplay format is concerned? There are a number of excellent books and software programs on the subject that can most definitely help you breed a sense of familiarity. While it can take many years to become somewhat of an expert on proper screenplay formatting, you can cut down the number of gross errors and mistakes by a significant margin. But, is there not a zero tolerance policy towards formatting errors. There is and, thankfully, there is a solution available for your screenwriting format woes.

What is the solution? There are pros available that can proofread and edit a screenplay for you. Some may even do it for the low price of $50. The key is to eliminate as many errors on your own as possible so the proofreader and editor is not over tasked with a ton of errors. If he/she is, then even the editor – being human – will miss some of them. (No one is going to pick up 100% of 250 grammar, formatting, or syntax errors!) Considering how significantly important it is to eliminate such errors, hiring an editor to properly examine your formatting is essential.

Next week is Big Money Week

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 08:06 PM PST

One of the changes I want to make this year is to add a theme week every month. For example, last year we had Horror Week, Biggest Sales of 2008 Week, Repped Week. I want to do that once a month this time around. So if you guys have any theme suggestions, feel free to offer them in the Comments Section. Next week we're going to be tackling 5 scripts that sold for a lot of money. Since most of them are at least a few years old, script links should be available. But swoop in quick just in case. And if you don't know when I post, get yourself onto my Twitter and Facebook feeds (upper right hand corner of page). :)

Conan update

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 07:37 PM PST

Like I said, things are changing every minute. Here's the latest:

It looks like NBC will settle with Conan for somewhere around $40million and he is free to go elsewhere. Conan, showing even more class, wants his staff to be taken care of too. They moved to LA from New York just seven months ago and now they're out of jobs. Meanwhile, other NBC executives are bad mouthing Conan (more like trashing) to the New York Times. Dick Ebersole called his an "astounding failure". Yeah, like Jay was a huge success. It's getting a little silly.

Guys! Aren't you the ones always saying it's just business and never personal?

Conan's last show could be January 22nd. Jay would ultimate reclaim his TONIGHT SHOW. But it will be under a huge cloud. The nice guy Jay Leno image may just take a permanent hit. America could view him as a villain. Or just not view him at all.

All this could happen as early as tomorrow. Thanks to Nikki Finke, who as always, has the scoop.

Realistic Movies – The Craft Of Creative Minds

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 06:12 PM PST

Pages:  Prev 1 2 Next

In this 21st century, entertainment is the one and only means of providing relaxation to the mind from worries. The most recent and the most popular mass medium for entertainment is cinema. The motion picture has grown much with the improvements in technology. With the advent of motion picture entertainment has taken the form of an industry.

The history of filmmaking goes back to the year 1895 when Lumiere brothers of Paris started projection of films for the Persian public. Earlier filmmakers in Europe and America concentrated more on producing commercial pictures. Up to 1910 films in U.K and Hollywood were meant only for entertainment. But films like City Light (1931), The Great Dictator and many more made by the great Charlie Chaplin, gave a new definition to the word cinema.

We remember Chaplin as a little man with a tight jacket and loose pants held up with a string; over size boots and undersized bowler hat. He was the only man who tried to portray the true picture of the underprivileged world. He tries to depict through comedy, a hard core of truth and painful experience of his life.

Changes were also seen in European films. In the Soviet-Union films were made on First World War. Russian films on Lenin and Russian Revolution tried to bring out in front of the audience the political scenario as well as the social scenario of Russia. Efforts of a few famous film makers of the first world to make films with the hard core realities from society and life gave birth to a new category of films, which later became world famous as realistic films.

In post war Europe, realism was in the air in its film cities, particularly in Italy and France. Writers who were professed leftists made new kinds of films, departing from the Hollywood tradition. To match the stories with reality, directors like De Sica, Lattuada and Castellani of Europe took their camera out into the streets and engaged non-actors to play leading roles. These films were shown in Indian cities also after their releases in Europe. These realistic films influenced many young aspirants.

The realistic films began their journey in India from Bengal. The internationally acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray was the pioneer of realistic filmmaking. In his first film Pather Panchali (1955) he worked on the conflicts and issues of post independent India in the background of his state of Bengal. There were also a few other filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, and Ritwik Ghatok who were impressed by Italian, French and Japanese neo-realist films.

This trend of making off beat movies is also seen in other regional movies. The genre of realistic film has given birth to many ace filmmakers in the Indian film industry. Realistic films were made in almost all languages. Realistic films were made in Hindi as well as in South Indian languages from time to time. It was Shyam Benegal's debut Hindi film Ankur (1973) which started an offbeat wave. This genre of offbeat film was nourished by many big names of Indian film industry like Govind Nihalani, Basu Chatterjee, Ketan Mehta, Mahesh Bhatt, Kalpana Lajmi and Nabendu Ghosh. They pioneered a new path in filmmaking.

In the 21st century this trend of making realistic movies has been kept alive by filmmakers who believe that cinema is the art of the directors, not that of the artistes or technical experts. These offbeat films not only make us aware of the social and economic conditions prevailing in our society, but also show different aspects of life. The new Indian realistic cinema, for instance, has great social significance, presenting a modern, humanistic point of view in contrast to the fantasy world of popular cinema. We hope that in future the Indian creative minds will keep alive this genre of realistic movies.

The Screenwriter's Success Newsletter

Dear Andrew,

Screenwriter Joe Forte (writer of "Say I Do") once said about screenwriting:

"The price of getting into the film business - and probably a lot of other businesses that have competition - is figuring out your path. If there's a brick wall in front of you, are you going to ram your head against it? Are you going to build a ladder? Are you going to dig a tunnel? Are you going to sit back in a beach chair and watch everybody else hit their head against it? How are you going to get over that wall?"

That's the question that every screenwriter must answer for himself.

And The Screenwriter's Success Newsletter is here to help you do that!

Networking Makes the Difference

by Marvin V. Acuna

"Based on a wide range of cognitive and social measures, from standard tests for IQ to personality inventories, there's little meaningful difference in the innate abilities of star performers and average workers.

"Rather, the real differences turn up in the strategic ways top performers do their jobs. While it's impossible to get in the door of Bell Labs without technical competence and high-level reasoning abilities, these cognitive skills don't guarantee success. But specific work strategies like taking initiative and networking make for star performance and are trainable."

A Legal Perspective for Screenwriters

Gordon P. Firemark

Question:
"I have a letter from the Copyright office that a book, written in 1880, was in public domain. I wrote an adaptation of that book into a screenplay. I then found that someone had taken the author's works (28 books) and trademarked them on the Internet. I talked to an attorney who said that I would probably win in court, but if they fought it, I would have to defend it.

"What is your take? Can I move forward, stating that it is 'based on the..book' or just write a new original script, using the same concept?" Read more...

No B.S. for Screenwriters - The Executive Perspective

Thinking Big...How to Sell Your Small Town Story

by Daniel Manus

"Your story is too small!"
How many times have you gotten this note? How many times has a consultant said that you had a good basic concept or the script was well written but the story or setting was just too small? I know I have a number of clients (not to mention agents and managers) who have heard me say these words. It used to be that movies set in a small town were relegated to indie cinema. But you'd be surprised at how many big movies are actually small-town stories. They CAN sell! They CAN be commercial! And so I wanted to give you the keys to making your small-town story a big-time page-turner... Read more...

Screenwriters For Hire

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 05:03 PM PST

Pages:  Prev 1 2 Next

When looking at screenwriters for hire, it is important to find the right one for your particular project. There are many screenwriters for hire, but not everyone is adept at writing screenplays. This type of writing is much different than conventional, narrative styles. It not only takes creativity and writing skills, but it also requires that the writer adheres to a very specific format. They also need to be strategic in what they keep, add, and leave out of the finished product. However, even with all of that, there are still small little differences that make one writer more suitable than another for your particular story.

Although one would assume that all screenwriters for hire are well-experienced in this sort of writing, it is, unfortunately, not always the case. Even people just starting out can call themselves a screenwriter. Of course, this does not mean that they will not be able to produce an outstanding screenplay, but it is taking a pretty significant risk. For this reason, when selecting a writer for your job, you will want to take a look at how long they have been in the business and how many projects they have completed successfully. Just as should be done when hiring anyone, it is important to see what kind of applicable experience the person has before deciding to contract them for a job.

However, beyond this basic background and credentials check, there are a few other things to consider when choosing from various screenwriters for hire. Writing screenplays is both an art as well as a science. Therefore, it is vitally important that your writer is able to properly format your story for the big screen, but also that they can do so with finesse. Although some people might be great at fleshing out and condensing a story to fit the standard 90 minute movie time frame, not all are able to do so with the kind of style you want.

In order to make sure your screenwriter can deliver the feeling you are looking for, it is important to get a sense of their own personal preferences. You will want to find out what kind of movies they like best. The more a writer is well-versed in a particular genre, the more likely they will be able to produce a quality screenplay in that style. When choosing from various screenwriters for hire, it is important to keep in mind not only their technical skills, but also their artistic ones as well.

Taste that Act I

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 04:30 PM PST

Alright, so it's not great. It's done on first pass, and it actually ended up about right. in the end of my first Act, the girl finds a tooth which she attributes to her father's real killer. It happens four-ish pages into the outline, or 30 pages into the script, which is just about the sweet spot. Of course, by the time I'm done, I'll have whittled that 30 pages down to 15 or 20 and gotten into the action much quicker.

So, my thoughts on Act I. Dialog is really bad. By the end I was just putting placeholder dialog in which conveyed exactly what I wanted said in that scene, but it was really generic, on the nose, and just plain terrible. Still, since I only started this script on the 5th, and I've only written during lunch breaks for the past 2 weeks, I think it's pretty mighty to accomplish a whole first act in what amounts to a grand total of 8 hours, minus that day or two I spent on the web series and the time sucked from me when I had to do work over lunch. Compound that with the fact that I had to get back in rhythm after being away from the project for so long and I'm kinda proud of myself for the effort. However, I will be the first to tell you that it's sh*t right now. That's why I have garbage draft written all over it.

Why don't I write at home? I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with a wife, 2 bunnies, and a dog. Work is the least hectic place in my life. There is nowhere to hide.

BAFTA Undervalues Writers

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 02:00 AM PST

The Stage reports that BAFTA's decision to move the writer category to the Craft Awards - which are not televised - has brought a scathing response from screenwriters in the UK, who claim BAFTA is undervaluing the contribution of writers to the film and television industry.
He [Tony Jordan, (Hustle, Life on Mars)] added: "I do think that the writer's role is somewhat played down by the BAFTA awards. After all, everything begins with the word. As they are so frequently gushing about an actor finding his or her character and performing all the complexity and depth of that character, surely they should be equally gushing about the person who created that character in the first place."

The complaints came to a head after Danny Stack, who has written for TV series such as EastEnders, penned an open letter to BAFTA calling for it to raise the prominence of its awards for writers in both its TV and film awards.

In his letter, he described screenwriting as a craft, but said: "It does not belong in the craft section alongside make-up and sound."

Stack told The Stage: "I think screenwriting is undervalued or dismissed and worse, condescended to, when everyone pays lip service to how important it is in the whole process. I think BAFTA should put it front and centre with the main awards and categories."

His views are echoed by Katharine Way, who has written for Doctors and Casualty, and who claimed that there should be two writing awards - one for drama and one for comedy. "How do you compare the writing of Criminal Justice, say, with the writing of a new sitcom?" she said.

Writers' Guild of Great Britain deputy general secretary Anne Hogben said it was an ongoing concern for the guild's members and added: "Most writers feel very disgruntled indeed about how they are airbrushed out of the picture. BAFTA is obsessed with glamorous starlets. They prefer to keep writers in the back room, along with the make-up artists and focus pullers."

Question: Does Tarantino use traditional narrative structure or not?

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST

Open Forum question from Jeff:

OK Scott, I have a horribly lame question, one that if you decide to ignore completely, I'd understand.

Here goes...

I, like many of our ilk, have a love of Quentin Tarantino's work... not so much that I'd ape it (a sad byproduct of his popularity... the inevitable Tarantino clones) but enough to glare and stare at one of his films at least once a month.

I've seen screenwriting gurus attempt to profess that he is indeed following the 'rules,' that his films do indeed have structure, and that we'd all be fools to break convention just because we ASSUME QT is.

However...

I obsess over DEATH PROOF (usually regarded as his 'failure'). This formless, shapeless movie entertains the hell out of me. The run-on dialogue of the prattling gals who become pastrami under the tires of Stuntman Mike's hot rod, the razor-sharp Kurt Russell performance, the mood and tone of the Austin nightlife scenes, the, dare I say, hottest lapdance scene ever put on film (hey, I'm a male, so sue me!) For me, it all just works beautifully.

Since the only structure I can possibly decipher upon examining the screenplay is a break at page 75, where we switch from one set of girls (meat wagon fodder) to another (stunt girls who are a match for Mike), how is it that this film works - - enough, certainly, to sneak past execs, test screenings, critics, etc. Granted, this film probably garnered Tarantino's lowest reviews yet (though it did have it's supporters in the film criticism world... Peter Travers @ Rolling Stone certainly), still - - I feel he employed a very European approach to these proceedings (Godard and Truffaut spring to mind) and applied them to a very American arena (the sleazy Drive-In style movie). Seems to me he pulled the same hijinks with Jackie Brown - - felt like Godard with a Blaxpoitation lens. (that script was no less shocking in its structural wobbliness)

There's a question in here somewhere, right Jeff?

Certainly. Why is it that everything we know about screenplay structures and disciplines DON'T seem to apply to a Tarantino opus? Is the man simply a genre unto himself? And what of the Tarantino apologists who claim that he indeed is employing a 3 act structure? Both Field and McKee attempt to do so in their various books (to almost humorous extents in Syd Field's THE SCREENWRITER'S PROBLEM SOLVER guide!) It's almost as if they feel at risk by a maverick like him and cover up by saying "oh no, Pulp Fiction is completely by the numbers actually..."

Major apologies for this run-on sentence of a question (hey, I figure a question about Tarantino films should appropriately be overly verbose, right?) but it's been nagging at me for far too long...

Jeff, I'll have to beg off responding re Death Proof because I've not yet seen it. And in all honesty, I don't think there's much point attempting to cram Tarantino into a 'traditional' screenplay structure. But how about this? An analysis of Pulp Fiction I presented to one of my online classes back in 2003. See if any of this groks you:

A great example of non-linear storytelling is the script to this week's featured movie PULP FICTION (written by Quentin Tarantino, stories by Quentin Tarantino & Roger Roberts Avery).

ANALYSIS

1. The movie begins and ends with the Coffee Shop scene; it is the only time we see Pumpkin and Honey Bunny.

2. We do not know until the very end of the movie, when Jules (p. 155) refers to the business about retrieving the black briefcase "this morning," that the opening scene occurs on our Monday dateline.

3. The story takes place over the course of four days, Monday through Thursday.

4. There are two scenes which are played out, then replayed from a different POV: Scene 1 (Pumpkin and Honey Bunny) and Scene 24, and the very end of Scenes 2 (Jules and Vincent) and Scene 19 (The Fourth Man).

5. At the end of the movie, Vincent is alive. Of course, this is Monday; he ends up dying at the hands of Butch on Thursday (Scene 15, p. 96).

6. The script is comprised of several substories strung together: Jules and Vincent, Vincent and Mia, Butch and Fabian, Butch and Marsellus.

There is much more we could discuss about this inventive script, but for purposes of this lecture's subject matter, let's go directly to the heart of the matter:

Why tell the story in a non-linear style?

I have thought long and hard on this. The first time I saw PULP FICTION, I thought Tarantino had gone the non-linear route because it was stylistically cool. And indeed, it is cool. Arguably, this movie spawned an entire wave of cinematic storytelling, everything from end-scenes placed up front movies (THE USUAL SUSPECTS), movies which employ occasional non-linear storytelling elements (OUT OF SIGHT) to movies whose plot is told in reverse (MEMENTO).

But after reading the script several times, I have come to the conclusion that Tarantino, whether he intended it or not, hit upon non-linearity as the only way he could tell one particular storyline in the script, the tale which comprises the 'moral' center of the movie, the story around which the screenplay's Themeline revolves. That story involves the fates of Jules and Vincent.

Tarantino goes to great lengths up front, enormous gobs of seemingly inane dialogue (p. 7-17), to establish Jules and Vincent as sort of philosopher-goofballs, whose vocation, as it happens, is to whack people. So Tarantino has set us up to anticipate yet another post-modern ironic take on violence, the breakdown of society, blah blah blah.

But what is really going on, in my opinion, is far more traditional: A tale about morality and humanity, one guy who finds it (Jules), and one guy who does not (Vincent). The guy who finds it, lives. The guy who does not, dies.

Look at it this way: Jules and Vincent are co-Protagonists. Both are confronted by the same story-turning event, the Fourth Man shoot-'em-up (which coincidentally happens on page 26, smack dab in the middle of where Syd Field says the 1st Plot Point should be located). Against all odds and logic, both men survive without a scratch.

Jules is convinced this is a miracle ("We just witnessed a miracle!" – p. 115), but Vincent denies it, choosing to see the incident as "a freak, but it happens."

Jules is moved by the event to decide to change his lifestyle ("That's it for me. From now on in, you can consider my ass retired." – p. 116), while Vincent is convinced that Jules is "freakin' out."

The fact that one of them chooses to change and the other doesn't – that is the reason the non-linear approach to telling the story works.

Again, whether Tarantino intended it or not, by presenting the story's seminal moment up front, then moving forward in time to see how Vincent handles the event (no change in attitude) and his resulting death, underscores the importance of the story's other significant moment, one which plays directly to the script's Themeline.

On p. 152, back in the coffee shop where we began, Pumpkin and Honey Bunny have drawn their weapons, and are going about rousting people, pulling off their twitchy robbery. Eventually, they come upon Jules sitting calmly at his booth, wearing his absurd "I'm With Stupid" T-shirt (Vincent happens to be off in the bathroom, a second time his gastro-intestinal timing impacts the plot, his other visit to a bathroom resulting in his untimely death). Pumpkin has his gun trained on Jules, unaware that Jules has his own gun drawn out of sight beneath the table.

Now Jules is faced with the script's big choice: He could easily blow away Pumpkin, an act which would in effect renounce his recent determination to live a different (moral) life; or he could try another, more peaceful tact.

Tarantino literally presents two potential futures: The first is Jules killing Pumpkin; the second is Jules talking his way through the situation, going so far as to give up his own hard-earned cash to the robbers, allowing them to go free (when Vincent returns from the john, he demonstrates that he still does not 'get' where Jules is coming from - "Jules, if you give this nimrod fifteen hundred bucks, I'm gonna shoot 'em on general principle.")

The movie ends with the second future 'winning' out – Pumpkin and Honey Bunny do not die and make off with the cash they have thieved, followed by Jules and Vincent who wordlessly shuffle out of the joint, heading off toward their respective fates.

Bottom line, you, the writer, could not introduce Jules and Vincent in the coffee shop on p. 8 in the middle of a robbery and expect the reader to have any understanding of what the moral dilemma is, what the symbolic lay of the land is, what your thematic point is. No, in order to understand what is at stake in this key moment, the reader needs to know more. Otherwise, the impact of Jules' transformation would be utterly minimized.

What works so beautifully with the non-linear approach to PULP FICTION is that:

  • We get a chance to witness the opening shoot-out and wonder how it has anything to do with anything else for 141 pages - until we finally see it pay off.
  • We get a chance to meet Jules and see the ingrained violence of his world, setting the bar especially high for him to change.
  • We get a chance to live with the Fourth Man's stunned expression after he unloads his .357 to no effect and his pursuant comment, "I don't understand," knowing that something odd took place at the end of that scene; again how will this pay off?
  • We get a chance to live with Vincent who doesn't show a depth of soul akin to Jules (and ends up dying for his lack of human potentiality).
  • We get a chance to see another tortured soul with a choice, Butch, who makes the right decision (dignity in refusing to throw the fight), then makes another and even harder choice (goes back to help save Marsellus, the guy who wants him dead), but whose 'moral' decisions result in earning him his 'freedom' and the ability to live a new life.

All that story material, so when we rejoin the Jules' storyline, we 'get' Tarantino's moral landscape. When Jules has his life-altering confrontation with Pumpkin, and a single twitch of a finger could turn their little world into an instant bloodbath, we buy the meaning of the last words Jules says to the nervous robber, "The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin'. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd."

In sum, PULP FICTION is a great example of non-linear storytelling.

Okay, back to 2010. And not sure if the lecture speaks to your question directly. But it is interesting to think that Tarantino uses a non-traditional narrative approach to tell a story that beneath it all is a rather traditional morality tale.

My take on Leno-Conan.

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 02:23 PM PST

A lot of readers have asked my opinion of the Leno-Conan debacle. You mean, besides fire Jeff Zucker? Anyway, here's what I think:

Jay was stupid five years ago agreeing to surrender THE TONIGHT SHOW. None of this would have happened if he didn't say, "Hey, fuck you. I'm beating Letterman. Go away. I'll leave when I'M ready to leave."

Jeff Zucker has ruined everything hes touched at NBC. Under his stewardship they've gone from the number one network to somewhere below OXYGEN. His claim to fame is what, "supersize" episodes of JOEY?

Moving Jay to 10 and putting Conan in THE TONIGHT was the worst television decision in history. There's nothing else that even comes close.

Making it worse, Zucker makes this bold move and obviously had no Plan B should it fail (despite everyone including people in foreign lands who don't watch TV predicting it would).

Conan's public letter was fucking brilliant. It showed conviction and class. Oh, and I agree with him.

Zucker compounded the damage by threatening legal action to keep Conan off the air if he doesn't fulfill his contract. A) Good luck getting that past a judge, and B) Do you really want to put a guy on the air for an hour a night who doesn't want to be there? For 3 1/2 years? How does this man keep his job???

This is such a fluid story that it's hard to predict what will happen. But for my money, I say keep Conan where he is, hosting THE TONIGHT SHOW at 11:30. If he didn't earn it before, he did this week with that letter. I'm guessing Johnny would be proud.

And Jay unfortunately becomes the odd man out. He'll wind up at another network, make a gazillion dollars, and do just fine.

And when all the dust settles – Craig Ferguson will be the new king of late night.

That's how I feel now. Come see me in ten minutes when everything changes.

You might be wondering why coverage that's 50% recycled from previous scripts is more expensive than all-new coverage from our Basic Package. That's your first problem: assuming there's a rhyme or reason to our services. Stop doing that.
$200

Personal Bias Package
Mike hates comedy, horror, action and drama. If you have a screenplay that fits into one of those genres, Mike will be happy to rip it to shreds for you, no matter how good it is. Overnight rush available! Just add 50%.
$225

Thesaurus Plus
Using both a physical thesaurus and thesaurus.com, we'll go through your script and change normal words to big ones. Guaranteed to impress, galvanize, stimulate and thrill your readers! See?

Add $75 for Pseudonym Punch™

Validation Pack
You're not going to address our notes anyway, so let's just call this what it is: a desperate plea for positive reinforcement. We're more than happy to oblige, especially since we'd like your return business. We guarantee you won't be disappointed by our glowing review! Also included is a chart of companies to target with your material, which we can already tell is fabulous.
$500

Misguided Development Notes
We've never been part of the actual development or production process on a feature film, but that won't stop us from giving you all kinds of ignorant, misguided advice!
$800
Add $200 for casting suggestions

Titlemania!®

Scouting Policy
If we truly LOVE your script, we'll blast it out to all six of our contacts. Which is pretty awesome for YOU, because The Hollywood Roaster and Mike Bernell have connections at the top management companies in town (and two in Florida). If you think it's weird that we have all these hookups, but still can't work them for our own benefit, please don't read too much into that. We only care about your success. We promise.

About Mike Bernell
A failed screenwriter himself, Mike can identify the weaknesses in any writer's script, then exploit and insult those deficiencies for pure profit. His wide-ranging experience includes a 3-month stint at ICM and numerous freelance gigs (i.e. unpaid internships) for small production companies. He is currently unrepped, but working on his 23rd feature screenplay.

Choosing a Major Within a Film School Program

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 01:32 PM PST

Pages:  Prev 1 2 Next

Once you're in film school or in a film program there are certain classes that will be required no matter what you decide to take simply so you can learn more about the industry and how things work so you'll be better informed of the process. But at some point you'll have to declare a major or an emphasis. You might choose one and then realize you're not happy doing that. Just know that changing in the middle is fine, you want to explore your options and find the discipline that is right for you.

Directing

The most popular choice among film school students. Directing will teach you everything you need to know about getting behind the camera, instructing actors on how to portray their character and deliver lines, set up shots, work through pre-production, break down a script and more. Since it is the most popular major there will be a lot of competition among students for attention, equipment and more.

Screenwriting

Studying the writing of film. You will learn what make a good story, characters and dialogue as well as the craft of writing quality entertainment and the various structures of scripts for television, film, commercials and so on. Writing is generally a class a lot of film school require but not a major many get into for the long haul.

Cinematography

The man (or woman) behind the camera. You will study the interworkings of film and digital cameras, composing shots, color schemes, the science and math of shooting and how to use various equipment. Cinematography is a very hands on major so you have to be prepared to be on the go grabbing a camera and shooting at a moments notice.

Editing

The study of splicing a movie together to make a coherent study. Before getting into this major you should be warned, you'll spend most of your time in front of a computer so you better like this position and staring at multiple screens, otherwise choose something else. Editing is a tedious major but there is lots of work out there for editors so it can be quite lucrative.

Set Design

For the creative ones who like to use their hands as well. Set design also implies set creation and as very few people major in set design you will be quite in demand meaning you'll always be busy and have a ton of things to put in your portfolio. This can also transition into stagecraft design so you can work on plays and stage productions or even interior design thus this emphasis lends itself to a lot of other possibilities.

Sound

One of the smallest categories but among the most important. You will study the recording and creation of sound and sound effects as well as the art of using sound in film and the engineering of sound.

General Production

The broad category of emphasis if you still don't know exactly where you fit in or think that perhaps work as a grip or gaffer may be more of your thing. You'll learn a little bit of everything. Be prepared to get your hands dirty, for long set days on student films and lots of physical labor. You will gain a ton of knowledge on various aspects which may sway you one way or another into another emphasis or confirm your decision to stay generalized. Since you will have a lot of skills the job market will be very open to you.

Learn to write, shoot, edit, score and produce your own film at Asia's Premier Film School, the International Academy of Film and Television. Learn filmmaking from accomplished professionals from Hollywood and other film capitals.

Movies You Made: "Spoiler Alert" by Emei Willis

Posted: 15 Jan 2010 01:00 PM PST

More Movies You Made, this one from Emei Willis:
I recently started to take sketch comedy classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles. It's been great so far, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to expand their comedy portfolio.

The great thing about learning and writing sketch comedy at the UCB is how it has translated into my other projects. The UCB prides itself on the Game technique. Basically, finding the joke of the scene as soon as possible and hitting that joke in as many ways possible. Now, in my other scripts, I try to economize my dialogue and get to the point or the joke as soon as possible, because otherwise it can be a lot of dead air.

Anyways, I've recently started to film my sketches and here is the first one.
The comedy short "Spoiler Alert":

If you have any questions or comments for Emei, post them here.

This ends our series of Movies You Made, but if you've got something you've made, lob them my way, and I'll them from time to time.
