| Famous Film Directors who didn't go to film school Posted: 09 Jan 2010 11:31 AM PST
Here is an article that details five famous film directors who all have one thing in common they didn't spend a single day in film school. They learned and became a master at their craft from simple trial and error, self-study and unshakable self confidence and belief in themselves. 5. David Fincher Oscar History: 1 Nomination 4. Peter Jackson Oscar History: 8 nominations, 3 wins. 3. Sir Ridley Scott Oscar History: 3 Nominations 2. James Cameron Oscar History: 3 wins. 1. Steven Spielberg Where should I start? Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for 1993's Schindler's List and 1998'sSaving Private Ryan. Three of Spielberg's films, Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993), broke box office records, each becoming the highest-grossing film made at the time. To date, unadjusted gross of all Spielberg directed films exceeds $8.5 billion worldwide. Oscar History: 12 nominations, 3 wins. Everything good that can be said about Spielberg has probably alright been said so the best compliment I can give this Hollywood icon is that I saw "Jaws¨ when I was five years old. Now I'm thirty-four and still get a little freaked out when swimming in the ocean, all because Spielberg made a timeless and classic shark thriller. I hope this article leaves you with the belief that the most important characteristic needed to become a successful movie director is determination. Not schooling, not money, not being a child prodigy and not your contacts. I would like to end this article with a quote from James Cameron. "I think the most important thing if you're an aspiring film-maker is to get rid of the 'aspiring'… You shoot it, you put your name on it, you're a film-maker. Everything after that, you're just negotiating your budget." To Your Success! Ian Agard P.S. | Posted: 09 Jan 2010 07:00 AM PST I happened to tune in NPR's "Fresh Air" the other day and there was George Lucas being interviewed to promote his new book "George Lucas's Blockbusting: A Decade-by-Decade Survey of Timeless Movies Including Untold Secrets of Their Financial and Cultural Success". And while the decidedly left-brain approach of the book -- going through endless files to uncover production budgets, actual box office totals, and so on -- would seem to result in something less than entertaining, it sounds like precisely the opposite. Here are some excerpts of the interview with guest host David Bianculli:
And then Lucas confirms the longstanding rumor about a swap he and Spielberg did: Spielberg took points on Star Wars: A New Hope and Lucas took points on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. What a hoot. For a transcript of the interview, go here. And for the podcast, go here. UPDATE: In comments, Trellick Tower asked: Can you explain the "taking points" thing? Does it mean Spielberg got the money from Lucas' percentage of Star Wars?Points are a percentage of the overall movie's revenue. There are "net" points, which is based on the profits a movie nets (after expenses), and "gross" points, which generally speaking is based on gross dollars. There are many definitions of the latter -- "dollar one gross" which is the percentage kicks right-away to more watered down versions that are tied to including some expenses -- but obviously you prefer a gross position, rather than a net position. This is especially true because of the studios', shall we say, creative bookkeeping habits. [Do a Google search on "Paramount lawsuit Coming to America Art Buchwald" and you'll see what I'm talking about]. Net points are pretty much a joke. Except for in the case of movies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Paranormal Activity, or Sex, Lies & Videotape, where the prod budget is extremely low and the revenues are extremely high, it's rare for a net participant to see any $$. In fact, when K-9 sold and Siegel & Myers had an office on the Universal lot, I had a conversation with someone a U's biz affairs office who said that the only person he knew who had seen net profit dollars was Spielberg (he was probably referring to Jaws). Which brings us back to Spielberg & Lucas, and their deal. I'm guessing they swapped net points, but they may have had enough clout at that point to negotiate for gross points. But the long answer to your question is basically what you said: Lucas got his directing fees for Star Wars, and Spielberg got his directing fees for Close Encounters. But they swapped their profit participation positions so that Spielberg got points on Star Wars and Lucas got points on Close Encounter. While both movies did good business, SW was a huge blockbuster, so Spielberg (in theory) made a lot more $$ on that part of the deal than Lucas did. But I don't think Lucas shed any tears over how he did.
| *SCRIPT COVERAGE... BETTER KNOWN AS "NOTES"<br>*<br><br>Does script Posted: 09 Jan 2010 07:08 AM PST SCRIPT COVERAGE... BETTER KNOWN AS "NOTES" Does script coverage really help screenwriters fine tune their material? I haven't had tons on coverage done on my work, but I've had my fair share. Most of what I received back was helpful. It's important to find objective sources to review your work. If you ask your best friend to read your script, or worse, your spouse, it may be hard for them to be honest with you without hurting your feelings. We writers can get a tad defensive when it comes to our creations and rightly so, but still, we need to hear what may not be working in our script, play or novel. Maybe it's the structure, the characters or the conflict... maybe it's the dialogue. We need to know the truth to move forward with getting the script produced. I've received some excellent summaries of my scripts. Sometimes I'll get notes back and compare them from various readers (producer, agent, reader). If all the readers are focusing on the same theme, then I know what I need to fix. Recently I received feedback on one particular script. It got great marks, but all the readers said they wanted the bad guy to be meaner -- like off the charts bad. So obviously I have to revisit my script and ramp up the villain more. I thought he was already horrible as the killer, but the readers wanted him to be even more evil (think Hannibal Lecter). Give your audience what they want with a fresh twist. So I recommend getting coverage on your work, but be selective in whom you choose to do it. There are a gazillion script services in NY and LA to help you out. Don't pay through the nose for this though. In these down economic times, hunt for a decent rate. Read the completed coverage at least five times when you do get it and then begin making notes to revise your script if it needs another polish or, heavens forbid, a complete rewrite. By the way, I've never put out a shingle for script coverage for writers on this blog, but I received a lot of requests to do so in '09. So if you want my humble opinion about a script you've written, I will give you coverage/notes on it so for a reasonable rate to cover my time. I will try not to hurt your feelings, but I will be honest. I will help you improve your draft before you submit it to professional agents and producers who won't care at all about your feelings. Happy New Year, Everyone! | ||

| Posted: 09 Jan 2010 03:47 AM PST I've been teaching an online class since Jan. 1 and as always am finding it completely inspiring for ME – I love hearing other writers talk about their stories and characters and writing processes. The discussion so far has also completely reinforced my belief that the best thing that you can do to help yourself with story structure is to look at and compare in depth 5-10 (ten being best!) stories – films, novels, and plays - that are structurally similar to yours. The late and much-missed Blake Snyder said that all film stories break down into just ten patterns that he outlined in his Save The Cat! books. Dramatist Georges Polti claimed there are Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations and outlined those in his classic book. I think those books on the subject are truly useful – as I say often, I think you should read everything. But I believe you also have to get much more specific than ten plots or even thirty-six. (I also think it's plainly lazy to use someone else's analysis of a story pattern instead of identifying your own. Relying on anyone else's analysis, and that for sure includes mine, is not going to make you the writer you want to be.) For example, in the class that I'm teaching now, without giving details of anyone's plots, there is a reluctant witness story, a wartime romance story, an ensemble mystery plot, a mentor plot, a heroine in disguise plot. And others. Each of those stories has a story pattern that you could force into one of ten general overall patterns – I guess – but they also have unique qualities that would get lost in such a generalization. And all of those stories could also be categorized in OTHER ways besides "reluctant witness" or "hero in disguise". Harry Potter, for example, is what you could call a King Arthur story – the chosen one coming into his or her own (also see Star Wars, The Matrix…) but it is told as a traditional mystery, with clues and red herrings and the three kids playing detectives. It's also got strong fairy tale elements. So if you're writing a story that combines those three (and more) types of stories, looking at examples of ANY of those types of stories is going to help you structure and brainstorm your own story. If you find you're writing a "reluctant witness" story, whether it's a detective story, a sci-fi setting, a period piece, or a romance, it's extremely useful to look at other stories you like that fall into that "reluctant witness" category – like Witness, North By Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Conspiracy Theory, Someone To Watch Over Me. If you're writing a mentor plot, you could take a look at Silence of the Lambs, The Karate Kid, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, An Officer and a Gentleman, Dirty Dancing, all stories in completely different genres with strong mentor plot lines, with vastly different mentor types. A Mysterious Stranger story has a very specific plotline, too: a "fixer" character comes into the life of a main character, or characters, and turns it upside down – for the good, and the main character, not the Mysterious Stranger, is the one with the character arc (look at Mary Poppins, Shane, Nanny McPhee, and Lee Child's Jack Reacher books). A Cinderella story, well, where do you even start? Pretty Woman, Cinderella of course, Arthur, Rebecca, Suspicion, Maid to Order (I think that the one I mean), Slumdog Millionaire. A deal with the devil story – The Firm, Silence of the Lambs, Damn Yankees, The Little Mermaid, Rosemary's Baby, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Devil's Advocate. And you might violently disagree with some of my examples, or have a completely different designation for what kind of story some of the above are… But that is EXACTLY my point. You have to create YOUR OWN definitions of types of stories, and find your own examples to help you learn what works in those stories. All of writing is about creating your own rules and believing in them. So I guess that's what I wanted to say today. Identifying genres is not enough. Identifying categories of stories is not enough. What's the kind of story YOU'RE writing – by your own definition? When you start to get specific about that, that's when your writing starts to get truly interesting. So what kind of story ARE you writing? Let's hear some, and brainstorm some great examples. Happy New Year, everyone! Related posts: What's YOUR structure? | Daily Dialogue -- January 9, 2010 Posted: 09 Jan 2010 03:00 AM PST "In the end there were no simple answers. | Posted: 13 May 2005 07:56 AM PDT Expository dialogue builds our characters personality. It gives the audience a chance to learn more about who our character is. For example, in the movie "Adaptation," much of the voice over that is used is built as an internal monologue that gives the audience an idea of the main character, Charlie's intense inner critic. Your Task: Identify one scene in a movie where expository dialogue is used. Now, write your own 1-page scene that involves this kind of dialogue. | ||
| Posted: 13 May 2005 07:51 AM PDT A great way to understand who we are is to understand our ability to handle conflict. Your Task: Use a character from a screenplay you're working on, or pull a character from one of your favorite movies. Make a list of 10 problems that someone might encounter that are unrelated to their own story. An example problem could be: You're camping and there's a huge rainstorm. You discover a hole in your tent. Now, getting into your characters' mind, solve these problems. | ||
| Cinematic Austin: Movies and More Posted: 09 Jan 2010 03:27 AM PST
Along with the many economic and lifestyle benefits Austin offers its residents, in recent years it has also become a popular location for Hollywood productions. The low cost of filming combined with the numerous historic landmarks and picturesque natural scenery of the Austin area makes it exceptionally attractive for producers seeking that special Texan atmosphere. Abundant local accommodations and Austin's unique and friendly style ensure that these special visitors come back time after time. Some of the most notable productions are found below. Screenwriters and directors Joel and Ethan Coen began their rise to stardom in 1984 with a little film called Blood Simple. Filmed in and around Austin, this stylish noir showcased the talents of an up-and-coming actress who would go on to star in numerous other Coen productions. Frances McDormand's debut performance as the sensual, faithless wife ensured her future success. The groundbreaking and exceptionally popular miniseries Lonesome Dove was also filmed in the Austin area, taking advantage of the unspoiled natural surroundings and local color. Lonesome Dove has an additional connection to the Austin area, as its screenplay was based on a book written by acclaimed western author Larry McMurtry whose son, James McMurtry, is a roots-rock icon and an Austin resident. As a longtime Austin resident, Robert Rodriguez has produced a number of motion pictures in the area, including the popular Spy Kids trilogy, GrindHouse (with Quentin Tarantino), The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Sin City, and The Faculty. His production company, Troublemaker Studios, is located in Austin and houses the largest green screen in all of Texas. An adjunct facility, Troublemaker Sound, is also located in the area and provides post-production editing and sound for Rodriguez's films. Troublemaker Studios is currently producing Machete, derived from the previous film GrindHouse and starring Danny Trejo in the title role. The popular television series Friday Night Lights is also filmed in and around Austin. Recounting the stories surrounding a small town high school football team, the series focuses on the effects of high school sports on students, teachers, coaches, and the town at large. Critically acclaimed, the series struggled at first, but soon found a local core audience due to its realistic portrayals of Texas small-town life. More recently, Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, was loosely based on the Lonestar Roller Girls, a roller derby company based in Austin and owned by the women who perform for it. Critically well received, several scenes for this movie were shot in the Austin area. Austin resident Mike Judge wrote and directed the 1999 comedy Office Space; primarily filmed in Austin, it is now regarded as a cult classic. Satirizing the office environment and computing firms in general, it starred Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston, with Gary Cole and Stephen Root in unforgettable supporting roles. Released to tepid critical and audience response, it has gained in popularity each year since its release, and was awarded the #73 spot on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 best films from 1983 to 2008. The Austin Tourism Board takes an active role in attracting filmmakers to work in Austin. Experienced filmmaking professionals and seasoned crew members are readily available in the Austin area. Additionally, Austin's exceptionally sunny climate and diverse natural surroundings offer a variety of different scenes and backgrounds for filmmakers, all within a relatively small area. Austin's friendly atmosphere is an additional bonus for filmmakers looking for a warm welcome; local government agencies and the Austin Film Commission are ready to help if any problems arise. Regardless of people's move beyond this structure, it's history, & applicability are important to understand for someone whose developing their craft as a screenwriter. Your Task: Write a 5-page essay on the 3-act structure. Where did it come from? What's it's history? What is it and how is it used? What are some of the challenges against it? What are some of the movies that use it? Has it developed over time? How?
| Posted: 06 May 2005 08:46 PM PDT Good screenplays utilize a "show don't tell" policy. Let's practice this. Your task: Re-write these 5 statements as descriptive dialogue. Do not use the following statements in the dialogue you write. | ||
| Posted: 28 Jun 2005 08:48 AM PDT The art of re-writing lives in your ability to let go of key concepts in your original work. I had an art teacher once who painted vigorously one day, then came back the next day looking at her painting "as if it was a blank page." She taught me to let go of my artistic ego and drop the attachment I had to specific elements of my work. Doing this opened me up to criticism and taught me a lot about writing. Your Task: Pick a scene that involves 1 protagonist, 1 antagonist & 1 other person. This could be a scene that you've written, or a scene from a movie that you've downloaded the script for. Now, switch the roles of the characters (antagonist becomes neutral, protagonist becomes antagonist, etc) and re-write this scene with the same action from the original scene. | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 10:57 PM PST The primary goal of a film is to elicit emotion. Daybreakers did an amazing job at this. I was so disturbed by the film that I had to take a walk outside in the sunshine after seeing it to calm my nerves. I'm no lightweight when it comes to dark movies or horror films, I frequently watch them alone, I had no problem swimming after seeing Jaws, or going home and turning out the lights after Paranormal Activity, but this movie got under my skin in a way most other horror movies have failed to do. For that alone, I give the filmmakers a huge amount of credit and classify it as a great movie. The other awesome thing about it was Willem Dafoe. The previews, while quite intriguing, didn't even hint at how funny he would be. He lent an amazing amount of charm, comic relief and wit to what would have otherwise been a too depressingly dark movie. Ethan Hawke was fine, but he was, as his character demanded, so whiny and self-loathingly tortured and brooding that if it weren't for Willem Dafoe the movie would have been a complete downer. I'm a sucker for vampire movies (pun intended), and I also find post-apocalyptic movies fascinating. The premise alone of this film was enough to make me want to see it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Spierig brothers brought this imagined future to life. The special effects weren't perfect, but they weren't bad enough to be distracting. The makeup was great, and all of the actors did a good job. The filmmakers didn't spare any detail and took their time painting the picture of the brave new world that might exist if we had all become vampires-the school zone time was changed from 2:00 AM-3:00 AM, everyone chain smoked, since lung cancer was no longer a concern, and cars were equipped with special shields to allow the vampires to go cruising during the day. The dark utopia presented at the beginning of the film was fascinating enough, and the way the story unfolded kept me on the edge of my seat, with what were sometimes predictable turns that nonetheless worked and served to continually challenge the hero. There were no dull moments and nothing came easy. It also offered some interesting, though not wholly original, social commentary on class warfare, the use of limited resources, and how quickly a society can turn on its own once it allows itself to classify certain people as outsiders. If you've seen it, let me know what you thought. If you haven't, I'd highly recommend that you do. | ||

| Script Writing: How To Write A Good Script Posted: 08 Jan 2010 09:51 PM PST
As a writer, your dream on making it big in the entertainment industry is selling a script and making a movie out of it. Movies are one of the best forms of entertainment in the world. Since the invention and advancement in movie technology, people were always fascinated on how a movie works. One of the most important necessities to make a good movie is not the graphic effects you see. You have to know that there have been movies done without much special effects and still won awards and really entertained people. You have to consider that fact that actors, directors, and even producers have been successful because of one thing. They have been successful because they had a good script to follow. A script can mean the difference of making a complete movie disaster and also making it big and win awards. If you want to be a script writer, you have to make a movie script that will catch the attention of movie goers. It should be able to entertain the audience and should contain all the necessary things in a movie. Script writing is not something that only a select few can do, it is something that a regular person with enough imagination can learn, apply and develop. There is even script writing schools available that can help you enhance your script writing skills. The ever growing demand for movies has made a market for good scripts. If you like to write, you may want to consider writing a script. Script writing can truly be a very rewarding job. If you do it right, you can be sure that you can really make your dreams come true by just writing a script for a movie. If you are successful, you can be sure that you will be in constant demand by the movie industry. All you need is to have a great sense of imagination, a computer, and a printer. The first thing you need to do as a scriptwriter is that you should catch the audience's imagination early. Write a script that will play around with the audience's imagination. Once you have their attention, it will be much easier to continue with the script. Always make your audience wonder what's going to happen next. A good script should get the audience involved as the story unfolds. For example, great heroes in the movies should inspire your audience, and villains should make the audience feel the need to jump onto the screen. These are some of the things you should always remember when writing a script. At times, you may get stuck. This can be frustrating but getting stuck will mean that you made a mistake somewhere in the script. Review your script, edit it, and move on. So, if you have a sense of imagination, you can write a perfect script. Who knows, maybe you can make it big in the movie industry. Maybe someday, you might even win an award for writing a great script for a movie. Always remember that writing a script can also mean hard work. With patience, you will really see that all those hard work will pay off. Whether you are writing a script for drama, action, comedy, or a thriller movie, you should always remember that the key to writing a good script is by capturing the audience's imagination. | In Need of A Creative Correspondent Posted: 08 Jan 2010 08:52 PM PST Are you plugged into the creative heartbeat of Tinseltown? Do you know which hot new writer just got signed by CAA? Or which writer just landed the juiciest assignment in town? Are you up to date on the development of all the big pictures out there (i.e. Is the latest draft of Green Hornet, turned in last week, any good?). Are you someone who can express this kind of information in an interesting entertaining way? I'm looking to *maybe* start a weekly "creative correspondent" segment, but because of other duties, I don't have time to do it myself. If you meet the above qualifications and this interests you, please e-mail me at carsonreeves1@gmail.com. I could understand if I use a work computer, but does that mean even when I'm at home? Should writers not take assistant jobs at studios? – Chris Screenwriters have always been assistants, because studios are a great place to learn about the realities of the industry. And in the fifteen years I've been working, I've never heard of a situation where the studio claimed legal right to a screenplay an assistant had written. Not saying it's impossible, but it doesn't happen as a matter of standard practice. You're right to use your own computer and your own time — and that would hold true even if you worked at a Chevy dealer. If the studio has you sign a document establishing that anything you write belongs to them, well, take that seriously. Consider looking for a different job. In most cases, what's more important than the legalities are the formalities. If you've written some scripts and are in the process of looking for an agent or manager, it's custom to talk about it with your boss and let her read something if she asks to. Don't use her contacts as your contacts; your networking should be with other assistants. You're looking to preserve a relationship, both with your boss and the studio. Be respectful, even deferential, and you're unlikely to run into any problems.

| Question: How to handle writing a musical? Posted: 08 Jan 2010 03:00 PM PST Open Forum question from paulkoren83: I've looked through the previous questions posted and have not seen anything relating how to write a musical. I haven't a clue about what to include throughout the script such as discription of what a character sings about or their action/dancing in a scene.I wish I had some truly insightful answers, but this is one subject I know little about. Burg & Myers wrote one script that took place during a single night at a rock concert and we made up bands along with a few key lyrics which we would simply insert as dialogue like this: BANDThe thing is, as I'm sure you've noticed, there aren't that many musicals - as movies - around anymore. Yes, there is the current film Nine. And there was Fame in 2009. Of course, all the High School Musical films. Chicago. Moulin Rouge. But nothing compared to the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I'm not saying that to knock the genre, but rather to provide credence to the difficulties you've had finding out information. A good place to start is here at the great screenplay site SimplyScripts.com. They have a whole section on musicals. I just now had a thought. Dashed off onto the Web. And voila! Found something that might help you. What about the screenplay for The Lion King? Yes, it's animated, but it's a musical. And you can get a PDF of it here for the low, low price of zero dollars! If you look at The Lion King, they do this to signify it's song-time: SONG: "I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING"Notice three things: (1) They note that it's song-time by simply writing a Secondary Slugline (naturally in caps) with the word SONG, then song's title. (2) They cap the sung lyrics in dialogue. (3) And they extend the dialogue out all the way to scene description left and right margins. That seems perfectly logical to me. And as you can see, they bounce back and forth between scene description and dialogue, just like non-singing action. Again the only distinction is the capped dialogue and extended margins. That's my advice and I'm sticking to it! How about you, GITS readers? Any of you writing or have written a musical for a movie? How did you approach it in terms of format and style? | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 03:26 PM PST It's time to rededicate myself to my writing, something I do this time every year. This time I mean it. Hopefully. It always seems like it is going to easy to bang out 3-4 projects during the course of the year. In practice, not even close. Currently I'm trying to back my Nicholl semi script into a TV pilot, via my screenwriting group, which is an interesting process, and coming along pretty well. I've also started early brainstorming on a low-budget horror script I'd write with a friend of mine, for him to direct. Previous attempts to write with someone didn't work out so well, though neither was really the optimal spend-time-in-a-room-together writing process that likely works the best. So we'll see. Meanwhile I have a few scripts that are in good enough shape to be circulating around in minor fashion, though no nibbles yet. Still no agent or manager; it's tough out there. I also have a double-handful of scripts in various stages of completion. My script group is bad with that: if I have pages due, often I'll just bang them out without actually have had the time to plot things out. So there's some amusing takes on things, looking for a lot more direction. There's also this blog, which has been on life support for way too long. I'll try to post here a little more. I'm also in the process of cleaning up the links -- I'm sure there are websites on there that stopped being active years ago -- and adding new ones. I know I promised to do that months ago and didn't, but now I am, so if you want to be linked give me a shout-out. And may this be a good writing year for all of us -- Scott ***Update -- I just visited every link, to see which blogs were still active, and it was a humbling experience to realize I probably hadn't visited most of them in well over a year. Apologies to those who are still going strong (I'll try to check you out more often), and R.I.P. to the blogs who died along the way. The sidebar is now up-to-date. | ||
| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 03:17 PM PST Saw I saw Avatar, in Real-3D, and yeah the story is just a rehash of the whole Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves thing. But visually, it's so amazing that it would be worth the money if it was just a tour of this planet. So the fact that there is any kind of plot just adds to it. Plus the blue girl is cute. See it. This weekend is a bland mixed bag of items, while there's still plenty of holdover stuff to see. Look for Avatar to hold in the top slot, by a wide margin: DAYBREAKERS (2523 theaters). I haven't seen enough on this to make me want to see it, while Ethan Hawke's getting top billing doesn't have much cache. Prediction: an underperforming $7.2 million for the weekend. LEAP YEAR (2511 theaters). Pluses: Amy Adams is likable, and probably has romcom appeal. Minuses: reviews are fairly dire, and it isn't a leap year. Call it $6.5 million for the weekend. YOUTH IN REVOLT (1873 theaters). This has been sitting on the shelf for a few years, while Michael Cera doesn't seem to be stretching. Reviews are okay, but it's hard to see this doing all that much. $4.2 million. | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 01:31 PM PST the problem with rewriting based on notes is that you have to assimilate your taste with the taste of the producers on the project. ***NOTE: I think the producer of this web series is really open to ideas and I enjoy working with him very much because he will at least listen to an idea before he tears it down and is always up for spirited debate.*** Now, when you're always functioning on all cylinders and see the projects the same way, it's great and things get done quickly, but it's almost like sitting at work and having your boss tell you what she wants on you desk without describing it well. You might get it in one shot, or you could bumble around trying to figure out the right thing for an hour. It can get frustrating at times and it's very often like pulling your hair out. | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 02:46 PM PST just read this interview with nicholas meyer (he of the even-numbered star trek films). in it he describes himself this way: It's very rare that I get an original idea that I really like, although occasionally I do get one that's a doozy. I've discovered that I'm a born recycler, not just of paper and garbage. I like working material like it's a Rubik's cube – reworking, rethinking, redoing. It's what you owe to a great novel, story or play. It's also interesting what you can do with a bad one where you owe much less. Handel was once accused of stealing someone's tune and his answer was, "It's true; he did not know what to do with it; I showed him."i really identify with this identification. one of my struggles has been that as much as i want to be the most original and inventive creator/writer/whatever, i don't seem to be. my skill set seems most powerfully applied when i have raw material to start with. i can't enumerate how many times i've watched a film, read a book, heard a band - and thought of how the experience, the realization of that piece of work could have been enhanced, improved or just downright fixed. it's entirely possible that i'm just a legend in my own mind, but it's a least more pleasing to think i might just be more of an innovator versus an inventor. along those lines i discovered a draft of an older post i had intended to put up about my process as identifying as a writer and failing. as some kind of context to the above, here it is: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i've finally given up on identifying myself as a writer. and i must say my immediate reaction upon consciously making this choice was one of relief. i've written all my life, both non-fiction and fiction. i've wanted to tell stories all my life. but writing fiction - specifically screenplays as i've done little short story writing and no novels - has always been very difficult, painful and not a process i would ever describe as one i enjoyed. of course i understand that this is the experience of many writers and by no means do i wish to belittle that. but there have been some interesting discoveries i've made about myself as a result of this choice. for one, i already feel more free and creative. my style of creativity doesn't seem to work well with the linear, specific, detailed manner it takes to be a writer. writing something is all about details and specifics. i've always been a wholistic big-view non-linear lateral thinking type. i can be a specific detail-driven thinker, but i find it incredibly difficult to do that - to think from a critical perspective, and also be creative. i found my writing always tended towards the more realistic and concrete - and yet what im interested in is fantastic and non-literal. i love science fiction and action-adventure. i do want some verisimilitude in my entertainment, just enough to help my suspension of disbelief, but not as much as the wire (although having seen only the first three episodes of that show i can't yet say i don't like it). it's been very freeing to return to simply conceive of ideas, to let my mind loose and not worry specifically about plots or character arcs. to think more about cool ideas or interesting situations. that's more my style. and so i learned a second thing: that ultimately i don't care about story, plot or character. all the discussions on the internet that i've either participated in or observed about these things are uninteresting - except as they lead to one thing: an entertaining experience. originally as i discussed with my friend sean, when i made the disassociation with being a writer, i was surprised to find myself discovering an affinity with those directors that seem more concerned with a cool way of realizing a scene than the story. i found myself fantasizing about angles, set pieces and color. more abstract constructions. it's easy to get seduced by those pretty things. but following that allure i realized that im not interested in story or acts or even structure. im only interested in creating a fun experience. a ride. i want a film to draw me in, transport me to somewhere new and fascinating, and take me on a ride. it's that simple. if story does that, if plot or character or act breaks do that, then im all for them. but if they don't, or worse yet, get in the way, then i have no need or desire for them. the end result of an entertaining ride of some sort is the only guide. so if a film can give me that without a real story - with simply a chase or a fascinating setting - then that's valid. sure, it won't pass any screenwriting vetting or win any story awards - but i don't care. | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2010 02:03 PM PST Which movie do you wish you had written? Here's a sample of the answers I got: The Notebook (teenage girl) Remember The Titans (her mom) Inland Invasion (20-year-old male film student) Titanic (waitress in restaurant) Avatar (teenage boy) The Breakup (flight attendant) Citizen Kane (elderly "film buff") Mamma Mia (his wife) Up (bartender) Frida (security guard) Sherlock Holmes (guy sitting next to me on the plane) Now ask yourself the question. Why did you choose that film? Now as an exercise: Ask the same question to your main character? Why would they choose that film? What would your love interest or villain say? For example the lead of my current story wishes she'd written Moonstruck, because it has a great message: That love can always find you. On the other hand, her love interest would have written What Dreams May Come, because he's interested in how heaven will look. | ||

| Social Media Week Story Project Update Posted: 08 Jan 2010 01:14 PM PST The Social Media Week Story Project is starting to take shape. A team is forming. Stories and characters are developing. And a plan for pulling the whole thing off is starting to fall into place. Yesterday, Karen Hill and Scott Albert sat down with me and we had a first go at wrestling this sucker to the ground. I've worked with both Karen and Scott before and they are both funny, experienced, reliable writers. The kind of writers I want at my side when I'm biting off more than I can chew. The kind of writers who can save my ass. We tossed around idea for story and character and talked about our own and our friends' relationship-in-the-social-web-stories. We also figured out some process. The plan is for me to begin writing a bible that sketches out the beginning of story and character. We'll meet again next week with a broader collection of writer and contributors and keep figuring it out step by step. We're still looking for people to join the team especially in the following categories:
There are probably lots of things I haven't anticipated yet, so if you want to participate, let me know. (email to story2oh (at) gmail etc). P.S. If you come across anything on the web that looks like it could have relevance to what we're doing — in terms of story, character, strategy, etc — please add a link to the Social Media Week Story Project FriendFeed.

I am saving up some money from a part time job and i'm also currently writing a short film. Should i go ahead and drop out of school and shoot my film? I know i have a very low chance of going anywhere in the movie industry but i figured it's worth a try… I would still live a lot happier life working a minimum wage job and making low budget films.

I work at a major studio in town as an assistant. But the joke is that whatever I write is owned by the studio. It kind of freaked me out today and although I know you're no lawyer, is that just something people say jokingly?
