Tintin Movie Update

2008-10-31 23:53

Craig Phillips - Film

Those of us who are Tintin nerds will appreciate this update from Variety blogger Anne Thompson:

Tintin Watch: Sony and Paramount in Talks to Partner on Spielberg/Jackson Series

Sony and Paramount are in talks to co-finance two Tintin films in the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson series based on the Belgian Tintin comics. (The NYT first announced the story.) Both studios confirm that talks are under way.

After resolving the Paramount/DreamWorks divorce, putting together a studio deal for Tintin was next on Spielberg's agenda. After Universal balked at partnering on the first installment, which will be directed by Spielberg, Paramount offered to back the first Tintin movie with a reduced back end at $135 million.

Spielberg had planned to be already shooting the 3-D performance-capture film, and lost the participation of his lead actor Thomas Sangster when the financing fell apart at Universal at the last minute, on the eve of DreamWorks/Paramont divorce. This is not a DreamWorks picture; if the deal goes through, Paramount is planning to distribute in North America and some other English-speaking territories, while Sony will handle the foreign release. Tintin should be completed for a 2010 release.

Jackson was planning to direct the follow-up. The DreamWorks deal was originally for three films. The NYT is reporting two: one Spielberg, one Jackson. As I understand it, Jackson wasn't thrilled with the Paramount offer, so a partner offered another way to go. Jackson went through an ugly lawsuit with New Line Cinema over monies owed on The Lord of the Rings. His DreamWorks film The Lovely Bones has been delivered to Paramount for release in the fall of 2009.

"The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas."

2008-11-01 00:00

noreply@blogger.com (Scott) - story concept

"The best way to come up with a good idea is to have lots of ideas." -- Linus Pauling (famous scientist)
So you're working on a spec script and you're absolutely sure it's a winner high concept. Great. Let's say you sell that script to Hwood. Even better. Now let's imagine you're Hwood's "flavor-of-the-week" and your agent sends you around to meet a bunch of producers and studio execs. After they congratulate you on the sale of your script, the next words out of their mouths will likely be:

"So what other ideas you working on?"

Will you have something to pitch? Not just any story, but a great idea?

It behooves you mightily to have a roster of great story ideas. And the best way to come up with great one is to generate a lot of ideas. Most will be marginal or worse -- but the more you brainstorm, the more likely you'll find those rare gems worthy of a great script.

But how to come up with story ideas?

Drop by on Sunday. I've got a special Halloween treat for you. One of the best resources I know to help generate story concepts.

The Big Empty

2008-10-31 23:16

DMc - The Border

THIRTEEN EPISODES DOESN'T seem like a lot. I mean, most U.S. shows still do twenty-two. That idea of "the back nine" is daunting in and of itself.

Long ago, when I was a younger, exploited story producer for a lifestyle information show, we used to pump out thirty-nine episodes a year. That's only thirteen weeks off. A year.

I had energy then, oh yes. Energy and pluck. And I hadn't yet gotten to the point where I figured out that going out and interviewing people wasn't nearly as fun as making the people up and then making up what they had to say.

As I write this, the crew is probably lighting or blocking the last scene of Episode Thirteen of The Border's second season. The best thing about this season for me was spending more time on set and getting to the point where I enjoyed it. Yes, it's very enjoyable to sit in a chair and watch people work hard all around you.

But it's worth it for the kibitzing. It's worth it to go on long disquisitions with the Third A.D. on how the tail-based economy would work (Surmising an alternate future where humans had retained functional tails.) It's worth it imagining the D.O.P. as the host of a late night call in show entirely obsessed with all things tea, and tea related. It's worth hearing about how to flip houses, or hearing about the A.D. who convinced one of the actors she'd been savagely beaten by a prop bat. It's worth writing a video scene set in a trapped submarine, expecting a flat and lighting and arriving to set to see a whole goddamn sub corridor, lovingly designed, and built. Had I known I would have written more there.

It's worth seeing people working at the top of their game and feeling lucky that you can play in that sandbox, too.

Especially when the alternative is your little veal pen of an office, where it's been freezing cold after being boiling hot all summer, where the internet is always down, and you have to pretend that everyone can't hear you when you're on the phone. I won't miss that office, that's for sure.

But packing up that little banker's box today made me realize anew that there's not many jobs where you get to get sick of your office and then go back to working from home for awhile till you get sick of that, too. Variety is the spice of life and moving from development to production and back is a nice bit of spice for me.

Then there's a hug from the Producer's Assistant and a handshake with the Producer that threatens to turn misty and you think, "Wow, when did I turn into a character on Party of Five? Walk it off, doof."

A few months ago another writer passed on a phrase he'd picked up from the showrunner of Dirty Sexy Money. "Your career is the stone on which you sharpen your integrity." I've thought of that a lot the last few months. I'm looking forward to getting back to talking through what that means on the blog here. More craft stuff. Let's get it on.

So here it is, Hallowe'en night. The last few months have been joyous and scary, and frustrating and revelatory, and filled with laughter and camaraderie and neurosis and insomnia and sneezing and teethgrinding and all manner of wonder and oddity.

And now it's done.

That's a wrap. Ahhhh.

What's next?

The Case of the Missing Heart

2008-10-31 18:58

Jim - Story Structure

A common complaint of many films is that while they are stunning visually, they somehow lack heart. Often it is hard to describe exactly what is missing, let alone come up with the necessary pieces to fill that hole in a story. This is due to the nature of what is missing, i.e. it's not so much one thing that is missing as it is two.

Heart

When you speak of emotions or "heart," what you are really describing is the relationship between things. You can't really experience love or sadness without the context of that emotion as it relates to something else. Emotions exist as a result of an inequity between two separate things, whether they be objects or in our case, characters. The nature of emotion requires a relationship.

So when you see a film or read a story that seems cold, or lacking heart, what you are really missing is that heartfelt relationship between two characters.

The Relationship Throughline

In the Dramatica theory of story this relationship between two characters is referred to as the Relationship Throughline. In other story theories or screenwriting books this throughline is sometimes called the C story line or the "heartline." Put simply, this throughline explores the emotional meaning of a story's message. The relationship in question always revolves around the Main Character and one other Primary Character. This other character (sometimes called the Impact Character or Pivotal Character) stands in direct opposition to the Main Character's point-of-view and represents the greatest challenge to the MC's approach towards solving the story's central problem. This character provides the alternative.

But while the Main Character will have their way of seeing the world and the Impact Character will have theirs, this does not fulfill the needs of the relationship throughline. As Chris Huntley wrote in this Dramatica Tip from May 2004:

Many writers confuse the relationship throughline for the characters in it. Though the characters are party to the relationship, the [Relationship Throughline] is not about the characters as individuals…it is about the relationship.

So while you may have your own personal problems or issues, and your significant other might have his or her own issues, the two of you also have a relationship that carries with it its own separate set of issues. Now these relationship issues might spill over into the personal and may possibly even be informed by them, but it is important to clearly identify them as separate, especially when writing a story. You need to explore what is wrong with this relationship; why it's growing or why it's falling apart and how that impacts the two parties in question.

By doing so you will have supplied your audience with an emotional argument, or message, that will coincide with the more plot-oriented logistical argument of the "headline" or A story.

But most importantly, you will have given them something to feel.

Jack's Missing Heart

As mentioned in a previous article, Tim Burton's films, while always visually amazing, always seem to be missing something to me in the final analysis. Until my understanding of the above concept, I always chalked it up to his films simply being "dark" or "quirky."

But upon further analysis it's easy to see that what is often missing is the Relationship Throughline. Case-in-point: The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Now, I really like this film and I make sure to watch it every Halloween season. It's apparent that many others do as well, especially when you consider that 15 years later it still runs in limited engagement every October at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA. It is a technical marvel. But even that simple description accurately reveals what many feel is missing from this work — namely, heart.

Every time Jack and Sally (Main Character and Impact Character respectively) are just about to get together and have some meaningful contact, somebody or something interrupts them. One time would be understandable, maybe even two, but these undead lovers don't connect emotionally until the final scene! Jack doesn't even really verify her existence until the very end. It's very frustrating.

Some would argue, "Yes, but what about all those other great romantic films where the two characters don't finally get together until the very end? It's a very common device." It might be, but I'm guessing that in those successful films there is a reasonable amount of emotional development throughout. Although they might not meet each other physically until the end, their relationship grows, ebbing and flowing until that final heartfelt scene. A relationship can't just "pop" into existence, it needs to develop into fruition.

Nightmare lacks this development and therefore suffers from a lack of heart.

What follows is a montage of every interaction between Jack and Sally - I left nothing out. Note how often they get interrupted, but more importantly pay attention to how you feel at the end of this clip. If you're anything like me, you'll be left cold and frustrated at what should've been a more deeply explored and heartfelt relationship throughline.

Jack's Missing Heart

Happy Halloween!

Spielberg: Artificial Intelligence: A.I. part 2

2008-10-31 22:27

(author unknown) - spielberg

Act I of A.I. ends with the news of Monica's son Martin awakening from his sleep.  Act II (30:00 - 52:00) then deals with the consequences of that development.  It also represents a first for a Spielberg movie -- the narrative switches protagonists at the act break.  Up to this point, it's looked like Monica is the protagonist of A.I., but in the fade that occurs at 30:00 the point of view shifts decidedly to David, and will remain there for the rest of the movie (although it could be argued that it shifts again at the beginning of Act V).free stats

(Before I go on, let me go back and address one of the questions brought up in the seven-minute prologue: Prof Hobby proposes to his staff that they create a robot that can love, and one of his staff asks what responsibility would a creator have toward a machine that loves.  "It's a moral question," she says, and Prof Hobby answers "Yes, but didn't God create Adam to love him?"  David will choose Pinocchio as the narrative to shape his life, but Prof Hobby chooses Genesis.  This, of course, is not merely hubris, it is delusion -- "God," the god of Genesis, is as fictional a character as Geppetto, created by humans to explain their own fears and desires -- why would Hobby be so fatuous as to use God's narcissistic creation of Adam as an excuse to create David?)

So, Martin wakes up and comes home, and we immediately see a character dynamic put into play: Martin may be the "real" son, but David is the "ideal" son.  Martin is, bluntly put, a spoiled brat.  He never talks about how he loves Monica -- he's glad to put her health in danger if it means scoring points off David.  David, naive and pure, is easily manipulated by Martin into embarrassing situations.  And so Spielberg begins to raise, in small terms, the notion of "what is good for the child?"  David is a robot, but that doesn't make his love any less real or less deeply felt -- if anything, the opposite.  But children grow up -- they desperately want to grow up -- and will eventually go out to meet the big, bad world.  But David will always be a little boy, innocent and loving, his mind always full of wonder.  To put it another way, Martin is a "real" child -- that is, a human being, driven by fear and desire, narcissism and avarice, just like anybody, but David is only sweet, kind and loving.  It's as though Spielberg is undergoing an act of self-criticism: he's taking the wide-eyed, wondrous, nine-year-old boy sensibility that informed the enchantment of E.T. and examining it from the cold light of adulthood.  That, I think, is one of the reasons A.I. feels so strange for Spielberg -- just as Monica and Henry acquire David in order to examine their own selves, Spielberg made A.I. in order to examine his own boyhood ideas through the lens of an adult.  Because just as Monica loves David in an act of narcissism, David's need of Monica's love is, also, an act of narcissism -- he needs her love in order to feel complete, and he will do anything to get it.  Monica as a person means nothing to David, he cares nothing about her hopes and fears, only where he stands in relation to her.  This is a child's view of the parent, as selfish and manipulative as Martin's cruel pranks against David, and we will see, eventually, that Martin's need to feel Monica's love will reach the stage of the pathological.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Martin, to be cruel, asks Monica to read Pinocchio to him and David, and we see that David has become Cinderella -- no longer sleeping in the "good bed," he's been exiled to a cot as Martin gets to cuddle in Mommy's arms.

One of the motifs of the first two acts of A.I. is that David often confuses behavior and motivation -- that is, cause and effect.  He knows that happy people laugh, and so he attempts to induce happiness in his family by laughing inappropriately at the dinner table.  As a robot would, he doesn't understand where laughter comes from or what it means, only that it is a response to stimulus and, in turn, creates an effect.  In his case, the "laughter at the table" episode works -- it is a crucial ice-breaker in getting Monica and Henry to accept him.  Now in Act II, David falls for Martin's ruse about Monica's hair.  Martin reminds David of a movie they've seen -- again, organizing one's life according to a narrative -- where a woman loves a man and so cuts off a piece of her hair for him to have as a token.  Martin convinces David to, again, confuse cause and effect, telling him that the woman loved the man in the story because he has a lock of her hair.  David, having no real insights into the human condition, gamely goes along with Martin's prank and almost puts out one of Monica's eyes.

Before I forget, it's worth pointing out that even though A.I. asks "big questions" about society and posits a futuristic society complete with millions of robots and flooded cities, its settings for its first hour are ridiculously domestic -- a lecture hall, and a house.  This is not Blade Runner, it's not even Minority Report -- as in E.T., Spielberg keeps the narrative at the protagonist's level -- what does David see, how does David view the world?  The world, to David, to any child, is his house, and the only people who matter are his mother and father.  When A.I. does open out, we will never see any broad overview of the society, we will only see the things that directly effect David.

Martin has a birthday party, and Monica makes sure to make it a big splash.  This seems to be an intentional slap in the face for David, who, of course, literally has no birthday.  Martin, like all humans, can grow older -- David cannot.  Of course, Martin's birthday almost becomes his death day when David, making his own big splash, accidentally almost causes Martin to drown in the swimming pool.  Martin is hauled to safety, but David is left, like Ben Braddock, at the bottom of the pool, no longer the "ideal son" but a stranger, even a danger, cut off from the family unit.

(Family, the one thing Spielberg holds most sacred, is held up to the cruellest of lights in A.I., revealed to be a snake-pit of jealousy of self-regard.  That David will eventually "have his way" with Monica represents Spielberg's most brutal act of self-examination.)

Now that David has almost killed Martin, Monica has no choice -- she must take him back to the store and have him destroyed.  She betrays him in the cruellest, most perverse way imaginable, by telling him that he's going to go "on a date" with her.  I have no idea what David thinks is going to happen on this "date," but since he eventually winds up in bed with her it seems pretty clear that he's hoping for some kind of special intimacy.  All of which makes David's psychology more complex and Monica's betrayal more astonishing.

Monica finds in the end, that she cannot have David destroyed -- he has reflected her love so perfectly, to kill him would be like killing a part of herself.  And so she does the cowardly thing -- she takes David out into the woods and abandons him, in a scene of devastating betrayal.  The wounded, confused "No...No..." from David are like a knife into the viewer's heart.  Monica would have done better to put him out of his misery, as George does with Lenny, than to take a naive, trusting robot out to the woods and abandon him with no indication as to how he is to survive.  It is only as she's betraying him, when his mind is in the middle of its peak of confusion and agony, that she thinks to mention that the world is an unkind, indeed inhuman place -- that's the price for keeping a child a child, and that's why the question of "what is good for the child" is so important in the scheme of A.I.: David is thrust out, thrown out, into the harsh world with absolutely nothing to protect himself.  The "ideal child" is ideal only in the womb of the house, the world is no place for him.

The fact that David is thrust out into a woods exactly like the one where Elliott finds E.T. further indicates the contrast of the two movies, as will the emphasis of the big full moon in later scenes.  Spielberg knows quite well that he's messing with some of his own iconic images -- he made the moon image from E.T. the logo of his production company, he can hardly have forgotten it.

David implores Monica to reconsider, saying that he'll become real like Pinocchio and then she'll love him.  Monica angrily shouts that Pinocchio is just a story, which, in the narrative scheme of A.I., is like a slap in the face to David -- stories, as he puts it, are where it "tells what happens."

At 52:00 we leave David in his moment of terror and then, amazingly, shift point of view again, but we'll get to that next time.

Earl Pomerantz (COSBY, BECKER, MAJOR DAD, etc.) has also decided to join the ever-growing club of pro monkeys who pontificate for the benefit of aspiring and emerging monkeys. Here's a post about writing "like yourself" in his blog Just Thinking.

Check it out!

Weekend Box Office #108

2008-10-31 18:37

noreply@blogger.com (Scott the Reader)

Let's just jump right in:

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO (2735 theaters). This is the first movie that has sparked my interest in a while, just because I like funny R-rated movies and the cast is solid. I think it'll do well; call it $18.8 million opening weekend.

THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY (2652 theaters). I have no idea why they are opening this movie so wide, because I have no idea why anyone would drop $10-plus to see it in a theater. There are no name actors, the title sounds like a dull basic cable movie, and it's a horror-thriller rated PG-13. They are advertising it a lot; I don't think it'll help much. $4.4 million for the weekend.

CHANGELING (1850 theaters, expanding from 15). It definitely has a pedigree, but reviews have been very mixed, and apparently it just ultimately isn't all that great. It'll probably do about $8.2 million for the weekend, then drop like a rock.

ROCKNROLLA (826 theaters, up from 19). Just not enough of a hook to draw more than core fans of Guy Ritchie's earlier, similar movies. $1.5 million.

******

My writing continues solidly. Today will be day 11 of writing at least an hour.

I am dealing with the weird moral conundrum of writing a violent movie (albeit one with a solid story and characters) that I wouldn't actually want members of my family to see.

My wife says that if this is ever made, she's just going to tell her mother that I edited it.

Oh well. I'm just going to write the hell out of it, and let the chips fall where they may.

Eurporscript Exciting Treatments Workshop

2008-10-31 14:57

jezfreedman@hotmail.co.uk (Jez Freedman) - courses

Last weekend, screenwriter Trevor Walsh attended another Euroscript workshop, this time about writing treatments. Here are his comments.

Last Saturday I attended the Europscript Exciting Treatments Workshop. The purpose of the day was to look in to treatment structure and ways of portraying the essence of the story in an exciting and emotive way, leaving the reader with the urge to read the script. One particular view of Charles Harris, which I found interesting was his philosophy that any writing problem can be solved using the GOATS principle. I will quickly break it down.

G is for Goals, the character needs a specific objective for the scene or sequence, for example his goal could be to leave the room to grab a coffee.

O is for Obstacle, the character should have an obstacle in his way, preventing him from leaving the room to grab a coffee. For example a locked door.

A is for Action, what action the character will take to exit the room. Will he try and pick the lock, will he call for help, will he kick the door in. His action will be born out of his character and can act as character exposition.

T is for Tactics, the options open to the character to achieve his goals despite his obstacles. As writers we have tactics for writing each and every scene, Charles recommends that we come up with three tactics for how we might treat the scene, the first may well be the best but who knows what magic may come out of exploring tactics.

S is for Stakes, what motivates our character to get out of the room. Why is it so important that he leaves at that moment rather than wait for rescue to arrive.

This is an interesting way of looking at it, not just for treatment writing but actually as we are in the process of writing. Definitely food for thought. But to be honest, overall I wasn't overly impressed with the workshop and didn't feel it was anywhere near as good as the comedy one I attended previously.

************************************************
There's no doubt about it, writing treatments is a tricky business. I for one hate it, and most writers I know feel the same. Give me a script to do and I'm fine. Relish it in fact. But treatments are a whole different story. The biggest problem I think (and I am talking about mine as much as anything else) is that they are overally focused on plot. But reading a straight, 'this happens, then this happens, then this happens' document is probably nowhere near as exciting or satisfying as the actual story and script you are describing. A friend of mine actually has the opposite problem, in that her outlines and treatments are not plot cohesive enough but a full of energy, emotion and passion. We joked that if we could combine our brains we'd have the perfect treatment. So instead of embarking on what would surely be a dangerous operation, we wrote a few together and they are a marked improvement.

I think the important thing to remember is that not every plot point or script detail has to go into a treatment. (But always include the ending for my money - I know there are different opinions about this and some favour the cliffhanging end - but this is a risky choice.) As long as the story makes sense, you can leave some plot stuff out and put some emotion on the page. What does that mean? It means get across what the characters are feeling, how is the story impacting on them. Because this is why we will care about it.

It's tricky, but as a screenwriter treatments/outlines/synopsis are impossible to get away from. We all have to do them, and far more frequently than we'd like! So it's a shame Trevor didn't find this course so useful. And whilst there are plenty of script sources on the internet, sample treatments are few and far between. But they are worth seeking out and, as with anything in the writing lark - it gets easier and better the more you do it!

Halloween atmosphere: movie quote

noreply@blogger.com (JORDANTATE) - movies

MINA
I heard dogs howling. And when the dream came, it seemed the whole room was filled with mist. It was so thick, I could just see the lamp by the bed, a tiny spark in the fog. And then I saw two red eyes glaring at me. And a white livid face came down out of the mist. It came closer and closer. I felt its breath on my face and then its lips... oh!

Well, here's an easy, painless, two-second way for everyone to get involved...

Happy Halloween...

2008-10-31 14:29

whatwritesatmidnight@gmail.com (Chris Regan) - Films

So everyone has cool Halloween-related posts and I feel I should post something cos I like Halloween but I don't have any real plans. Last year we were in LA and did lots of cool Halloween stuff. This year we are in Portslade (or West Hove) staying in. I will probably watch the end of Dead Set which I'm enjoying and then it's a toss-up between Wait Until Dark or The Grudge, although Andrea might make me watch a Thin Man because she likes to be rebellious at times like this. Anyway that's not very interesting so go to Geraint's page instead where there is a cool zombie poem and a link to Brother Pete's instructional zombie video.

Meanwhile, this is not Halloween related but it certainly put a smile on my face:

The October One Week Challenge Selectee is…

2008-10-31 17:43

Don - Unproduced scripts

The October One Week Challenge (OWC) theme this month was, "It is October 31st and a community is being invaded, however everyone thinks it's a hoax. Two kids know the real truth… ". The genre was Young Adult.

As has been mentioned repeatedly, the OWC is a challenge, not a contest. There are no winners, however, if you take up the challenge to write a script in one you, you are, by definition, a winner. You can read all thirty-one of the winning scripts here.

As is tradition, one winning script is selected to be audio performed. The selection process varies. This month, the scripts were selected with the aid of two young adults who read a selection of scripts and picked six, of which three were sent to iScript.com. The folks at iScript.com made the final script selection. Thank you iScript.com for sponsoring the challenge. So, turn up your speakers or put on your headset and click the play button below and find out who the selectee is.

Let me know you thoughts on the Discussion Board.

A Day in My Life

2008-10-31 17:28

Julie Gray - The Business End

Ah....Halloween. Day of masks and ruses. And candy. The day before the day before the carved pumpkin starts to collapse and smell weird. Five days before a historic election and two days before the time change. It's a time to reflect and to ....okay I think I've pretty much milked that dry.

So I spent yesterday finishing reading and covering a FANTASTIC novel for Seed Productions. The main character was unforgettable as he introduces himself as a thinking man, entrepreneur and murderer. I think I signed some kind of non-disclosure something or other a couple of years back when I started reading for them so I'm not supposed to talk about what properties they are looking at. But geez, it was amazing. The trick with covering a novel is that one has to then indicate, in the notes, whether this property might make a good movie. Difficult thing to assess, since the narrative in a novel is significantly more complex than a script, and buried deep and twisted around so much internal character stuff. So one has to pluck that narrative out like the thread of a sweater and ask if that narrative is: adaptable, original, interesting and accessible to a wide audience, castable and of course, one must muse upon the expense of the whole thing. I gave this one a big thumb's up but did note that it would be expensive due to exotic locations and this falls under the category of Important Movie (aka Oscar bait) rather than a Friday night blockbuster, necessarily. I hope Seed pursues the property and that if they don't, someone else does, because I'd go see this movie in a red hot Hollywood minute.

I also cleaned my desk yesterday - I actually work at a funky dining table which sits next to two huge, old fashioned windows (in my very old place). I found, at the bottom of the stacks, no less than six scripts from casual acquaintances (to be defined as: neighbors, people I meet at events, etc.). These are scripts that they want me to peruse quickly. No such thing as perusing quickly. I did eliminate about three very quickly by doing the read-3-pages-while-standing-up-with-coffee test. I hate when I say yes I will give a script a quick look when in fact I always have so much else to do. I wind up feeling guilty and the scripts gather dust. My paying clientele has to come first. At the end of a long day of reading other stuff and administrating my business (which in fact is really three businesses) the last thing I'm in the mood for is - another script. And really nice dude I met at the Fade In Pitch Fest - you know who you are - you had a great pitch and I said I'd look at the script and it passed the read-3-pages-while-standing-up-with-coffee test and I know I said oh no biggie when you mentioned your script wasn't bound - but it is a big, fat bummer - if you bring scripts to events, three-hole punch and put brads in it!!

I also deal with business stuff on a daily basis. Answering approximately oh, these days even with my assistant running interference, 20 to 25 emails a day. Sending my bio here and there, figuring out where The Script Department booth will be located at the CS Expo and how many volunteers will be a the booth when and getting all the materials ready for that. Putting together class descriptions for an event in June 09. Fielding requests to announce or publish stuff on the Rouge Wave. Following up on scripts I am getting read on behalf of my clients at agents and managers. Dealing with the various bank accounts associated with my business(es). Making calls about ad buys past and present. And about 9,000 other things which are too specific to be of even mild interest. But you don't care about that stuff. It just keeps me quite busy is all I'm sayin'.

Which is why my favorite thing to do is to sit down with a script and a cup of coffee and a pen and just read quietly. I'm not really making decisions or judgments in that moment; I just read and let the pages fly by and absorb what I'm reading. I stop and make small notes but I think it's best for the story if it just flows like a river while being read. I make the judgments and comments later, when I'm done and I shift into note-giving mode. I really feel it's a luxury to sit and read scripts versus juggle the other, more odious things I mentioned above. And thankfully, these days I don't have to read three scripts a day so I am relaxed when I read now and give each script my all. When I used to do only production company reading I got into Reader Mode which is go, go, go, go and one gets jaded, burned out and exhausted. As I have said on the Rouge Wave many a time - this is who is reading your scripts if you don't have me read it first, so just know that. No use beating that horse again, you all know how I feel about the wisdom of getting notes before you throw your script into the lion filled colosseum of bored, tired, cranky-ass readers.

And then there's my personal life. (Insert long, uncomfortable moment of realization here).

The lines between my business and my personal lives are so blurred they are almost indistinguishable. My friends are my colleagues. Dinner, drinks and get-togethers always turn to scripts, the business, this or that agent or manager. I stay up very, very late at night since that's when I can catch up on emails and make decisions about things in a more thoughtful way. Those of you who may have gotten an email time-stamped at 2am know this about me. I also don't ever schedule anything - NOTHING - before 10am because I'm not really, truly awake until then. On those rare, awful occasions when I do have to be somewhere before 10am you'll notice I am quite pallid and inarticulate.

I can't figure out why my TiVo isn't recording all of the shows it's supposed to. I'm excited to vote this Tuesday. I left the fridge open again last night and the porch light is too high for me to fix myself. There's laundry in the dryer and six scripts staring at me and three important phone calls I have to make today. It's Halloween and I'm dressed as me - thinker, writer, entrepreneur, decider, mother of two and mother to many, a lover of movies and a lover of writing. Happy Halloween.

Spooky do's

James Moran - 2 Days Later

It's Halloween! Booga-booga-booga!

As is traditional, me and Jo will light candles, carve pumpkins, put on spooky music, then watch a selection of horror movies to celebrate the occasion. We watch The Exorcist every year, because it never loses its power. Some other classics get rotated every 2 or 3 years, so this year it's the turn of The Thing (Carpenter's version), because it's fantastic, and Halloween (do I need to say which version? I certainly hope not). I've also spent the past couple of months picking up new DVDs here and there, so we have a big stack to choose from, including Patrick, Road Games, Salem's Lot, Q The Winged Serpent, The Stuff (yeah, Larry Cohen double bill, that's how we roll), The Hidden, 10 Rillington Place (I'm counting it as a horror), The Amityville Horror (the original), and The Substitute. There are more, but I can't see them from the sofa, and I can't be bothered moving right now, I'm tired, shut up, leave me alone, etc etc. Probably won't get through them all, but at least we have enough to get us through the weekend. We've also got Halloween decorations - including spooky balloons - and will be making the superb blood cocktails again. Here's a pic of our Rope Of Weapons, which you may clickyclicky for biggybiggy:

Fear me! For I have plastic knives and stuff, and will be getting drunk! God help any kids who come to the door, I suspect it will suddenly cease to be fun for them.

Last year, I was a judge for the 2 Days Later short film competition - you get 2 days to write, shoot, and edit a complete short horror flick. I was a judge again this year, and my favourite of the whole shortlisted bunch was On Ice, which I'm delighted to see won Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress. The short looks great, is well directed, and is a nice, simple idea, well told. I look forward to seeing what they do next. In the meantime, you can watch the winning film here.

While you're watching things, why not watch this as a prelude to your Halloween shenanigans - the full length video for Thriller. Remember, Michael is not like other guys. In many, many ways.

So turn the lights off, stick on a scary movie or three, and have a scary Halloween. Otherwise I'll come round your house and brutally murder you, then flay you and run around outside wearing your skin, shrieking in Latin. And nobody wants that to happen. Except me, a little bit.

Great Scene: Psycho

2008-10-31 14:00

noreply@blogger.com (Scott) - great scene

After I first saw the movie Psycho as an impressionable youth, there wasn't a week that went by for several years that, while taking a shower, I didn't recall (and get freaked out by) this great scene:
           INT. MARY IN SHOWER

Over the bar on which hangs the shower curtain, we can see
the bathroom door, not entirely closed. For a moment we watch
Mary as she washes and soaps herself.

There is still a small worry in her eyes, but generally she
looks somewhat relieved.

Now we see the bathroom door being pushed slowly open.

The noise of the shower drowns out any sound. The door is
then slowly and carefully closed.

And we see the shadow of a woman fall across the shower
curtain. Mary's back is turned to the curtain. The white
brightness of the bathroom is almost blinding.

Suddenly we see the hand reach up, grasp the shower curtain,
rip it aside.

CUT TO:

MARY - ECU

As she turns in response to the feel and SOUND of the shower
curtain being torn aside. A look of pure horror erupts in
her face. A low terrible groan begins to rise up out of her
throat. A hand comes into the shot. The hand holds an enormous
bread knife. The flint of the blade shatters the screen to
an almost total, silver blankness.

THE SLASHING

An impression of a knife slashing, as if tearing at the very
screen, ripping the film. Over it the brief gulps of
screaming. And then silence. And then the dreadful thump as
Mary's body falls in the tub.

REVERSE ANGLE

The blank whiteness, the blur of the shower water, the hand
pulling the shower curtain back. We catch one flicker of a
glimpse of the murderer. A woman, her face contorted with
madness, her head wild with hair, as if she were wearing a
fright-wig. And then we see only the curtain, closed across
the tub, and hear the rush of the shower water. Above the
shower-bar we see the bathroom door open again and after a
moment we HEAR the SOUND of the front door slamming.

CUT TO:

THE DEAD BODY

Lying half in, half out of the tub, the head tumbled over,
touching the floor, the hair wet, one eye wide open as if
popped, one arm lying limp and wet along the tile floor.
Coming down the side of the tub, running thick and dark along
the porcelain, we see many small threads of blood. CAMERA
FOLLOWS away from the body, travels slowly across the
bathroom, past the toilet, out into the bedroom. As CAMERA
approaches the bed, we see the folded newspaper as Mary placed
it on the bedside table.

CLOSE UP - THE NEWSPAPER

beside the bed. The CAMERA now moves away over to the window
and looks up to the house, and as it gets there we HEAR,
coming from within the house, the SOUND of Norman's fearful,
shocked voice.

NORMAN'S VOICE
Mother! Oh God, what... blood,
blood... mother...!
One of the reasons the scene is so compelling is because of its 'slashing' pace -- compared to every scene up to this point, which play out at a rather leisurely speed, the shower scene -- from the point of attack to Norman's departure -- is (I've read) 78 shots in 45 seconds. You can go here to see a shot-by-shot breakdown of the scene. And here is the shower scene in all its bloody glory (Happy Halloween!):
